Have you seen the movie The Day After Tomorrow?

Unread post by tich »

I saw the movie this afternoon at Reading Cinema (best place for spectacular effects films). I'm normally cynical about Hollywood blockbuster movies - Armageddon, Volcano,... they seem to be ripoffs of Independence Day. But this one, though it's pretty unbelievable, it does raise issues of what could happen in reality, though reality shouldn't be that extreme. But events like snow in New Delhi and gigantic hail are exaggerations, not entirely unbeliveable. Just imagine this film making scenarios of NZ - tornadoes devastating Wellington or Auckland, snow in Mt Maunganui, and massive hail (like the storm that hit Tokyo in the movie) in Christchurch.

Off to see the movie tomorrow... :D I'll give you my verdict then.

Hey... Twister (the movie) is full of holes, editing blunders and not to mention the last scene where Bill Paxton & Helen Hunt are in the middle of that F5 and survive with nothing but a little mud of the face  ... but I still watch it over and over.

No I haven't but I'd better as my role of President of NZ's premier severe weather organisation! :-k
I am going on Wednesday night with some local Civil Defence people.
I'll report after then

Looking at an Atlas and a World Weather Guide book, New Delhi is actually outside the tropics (between about 25 and 30N) and well inland - it's lowest recorded (from the book - written more than 10 years ago) temperature was -1C. Presumably that it on a clear night, but snow there would not be as unbelievable as say snow in Calcutta or Bombay. But I guess the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush protect the sub-continent from icy northerly blasts. (here's another story scenario - the Americans are so tired of looking for Bin Laden that they decide to nuke the Hindu Kush, thereby opening the 'frigde door' for Siberian blasts to enter India.

Gigantic hail? Weren't some of the stones in the big 1999 Sydney storm as big as the ones that battered Tokyo in the movie? I've also heard somewhere (I don't know how true it is) that a severe hailstorm killed about 2000 people in China.

But monster tornadoes rampaging through LA - now's that's getting rather too weird to believe. )

YES, well I went to see the picture yesterday and all I can say is thank goodness if another ice age comes, especially as quick as what was indicated in the movie thank goodness I live in New Zealand as with the events that were happening in the northern hemishere, we are safe down here. [-( NZ wasn't included on the world map in the film and all they had down this way, that was mentioned, was a typhoon in Australia.
Tornadoes in Los angeles was as believable as heavy rains falling over Christchurch in a strong, dry North-westerly flow!

I wonder if Peter Jackson could produce this movie in reverse?
Say having those trio of ice-hurricanes form in Antacrtic areas instead of the Arctic areas as in the movie?
Tornadoes in Invercargill/ Heavy snow in Kaitaia/30C temperatures recorded ot Oban, Stewart Island?

Remember the 5th May in Chch - OK it wasn't really heavy rain, but was unusually intense for a northwesterly flow (and the Noon (?) radar showed a pink blob near Motunau).
