Cool in the Australian top-end & interior

Unread post by Willoughby »

It's being unusually rainy and cold in The Australian top-end. Alice Springs only got up to 11c yesterday

"Unseasonal rain which has been plaguing the northern district of the NT for much of May is continuing this weekend. Rain and storms have persisted well into the usually dry month of May, breaking numerous records over the Darwin-Daly, Arnhem and Roper-MacArthur districts of the NT and the Kimberly district of WA. Nhulunbuy on the Arnhem Coast has recorded nearly 400mm of rain in May, 150mm more than the previous highest May (1990) and around 5 times the monthly average (72mm). Darwin has recorded twice it's May average also, with 41mm so far this month.

The rain and storms have been a result of persistent east to northeast winds, maintaining conditions more akin to the wet season. And there are signs that more rain and storms are possible later next week, which could easily break June records."

"Cloud streaming across inland Australia from the northern coast has resulted in a spate of days with near-record low maxima. Alice Springs has recorded consecutive days with temperatures more than 8 below the average May maximum, with a top of only 11 degrees to 3pm on Saturday. Rabbit Flat (northwest of Alice Springs) was 16 below it's May average, recording a maximum of 13 degrees - four degrees lower than the previous lowest maximum. Even Broome has been well below average with a top of just 19 recorded on Saturday. The cloudy conditions have also brought light rain to the interior, though on Saturday falls have generally been less than 1mm.

The cloudy conditions should continue into the next week, as the cloudmass over northern Australia is expected to remain near the coast for the next few days." - Craig Arthur, weatherzone

Even Darwin is cold!
