While I have not done my May summary, I have not recorded an air frost this year at my station.
The closest it has got is April 29th when there was a ground frost but an air temperature of +0.8 degrees.

Looking through my records for lowest temperatures in April and May from 2000 to 2004:

April 2000: 0
May 2000: -2.9

April 2001: -0.8
May 2001: -2.9

April 2002: +0.8
May 2002: -5.7

April 2003: -0.1
May 2003: -1.0

April 2004: +0.8
May 2004: +2.3

All the anticyclonic gloom and nor'easters last month has kept the temperature up, at least at my location. I don't have the Christchurch Airport records available at the moment but I'll have a look tonight to see how many air frosts have been recorded this year.

And now I've got the figures for the airport;
April 5: -1.5
April 11: -1.7
May 26: -0.4
May 27: -0.1

I got 58.4mm of rain here in Somerfield ChCh for May 2004.
I see the airport got 51mm, just 1mm short of the June average.
Sunshine was down with only 127 hours, just 10 hours short of the average. I thought it may have been more than that with those grey overcast dull days???

Remember that the first third of the month in Chch was sunny with west or northwest flows.

I've seen NIWA's review of the month, and they said that snow settled in Methven on the 24th. I think they might've misheard what was said on TV1 Weather - which actually mentioned snow on Mt Hutt being reported from Methven. I don't that day's cold southerly was cold enough for snow on the plains - Deano's post mentioned it was about 6C in Ashburton at the time.

Hi Jeff,
Interesting our differences.
I record 7:30am to 7:30am (manualy)for my readings whereas you use the 0001 to 2359hr period.

Anyway on those dates above:
12 May was 17mm here
13 May was 5.3mm here
24 May was 11.3mm here

I haven't checked your site to compare but it would be interesting to see how Bob Crowder's records compare. He is overseas at the moment.
