wxgirl,

I think you were correct about the temperature fluctuations. Thats about what I would expect to see with a variable NW'ester. The person who removed the obs and replaced them with ' no data' is more than likely clueless. :)

Hi Wxgirl,

It wasn't warm all over town. I've compared my obs to the Airport at Metservice report times and found:

1st June
Time 15:00 - Pretty close
My Obs: 14.1C, NE gusting 8km/h
Airport: 13.4C, NE 7km/h

Time 18:00 - Much warmer at the airport
My Obs: 12.5C, Var gusting 7km/h
Airport: 17.2C, NW 27km/h

Time 21:00
My Obs: 13.4C, Var gusting 8km/h
Airport: 16.7C, WNW 22km/h

2nd June
Time 00:00
My Obs: 10.8C, calm
Airport: 16.8C, WNW 29km/h

Time 03:00 - Windy at the Airport, not here
My Obs: 10.9C, Var 9km/h
Airport: 14.8C, NNW 40km/h

I often see the nor'wester gusting at work near the airport but it sometimes takes another hour or so before the wind changes nor'west in Hillmorton/Hoon Hay.

This may be due to the proximity of the Port Hills. Overall I'm quite pleased we don't get the full force of most Nor'westers.

Before looking at any ob look at date and time. :)

I can remember big temp changes in NW'esters when living in Otago.

I heard a reporter from Otago on the National radio a couple of days back raving about how warm the start to winter is in Otago this year. I guess thats the case for most of the country.

Any Westerly /jetstream induced pattern always means winter in auckland unlike the easterly drizzel pattern for Chch a few weeks back ,we actually had above normal temps then :D

I agree, having experienced this myself on a number of occasions: it'll be cold and calm, then the NWer will kick in and the temp will climb very rapidly. It's jumped from low single figures to double figures in a matter of minutes. I suspect that since most NZ weather is incredibly boring, any indication of anything interesting is misinterpreted as erroneous data. :-)

There's an article in a local paper which mentions how a warm late-May-early-June is perfectly normal down here. After that winter kicks in with a vengeance.

While cycling to or from work and the nor'wester is just starting to break through, the short busts of warm air are very noticeable. Some days it's like someone has a fan heater on for a few metres along the road before it is cool again. I'd only be guessing at the increas in temperature, perhaps 6 to 10 degrees.
