I see MS again have Levin down to -29.8C yesterday?

Probably the default minimum of their computers hen theirs no reading,Weather display shows -100.0.N.Z will never go below that inour forseeable futures.

Yes, but they're not exactly consistent Michael, i.e. ...

-29.7C on the 2nd (0.2C corrected)
-29.8C on the 9th (9.4C corrected)
-29.2C yesterday?

I see the Metservice have now got a high resolution radar for BOP (last 2 hours) updating every 7.5minutes!

now why have they gone and done that? Is it for the Rena disaster?

I thought the same thing, it must be for that. Weird its a 7.5minute one they have given access to and not a 15minute one like the one for the CHCH earthquake.

Hmm...interesting! It looks to be high-res, but low-range (hence the relatively faster scan updates?).
My guess is that it has something to do with beach clean-ups?

Nah a full 300k scan takes 7.5min, if it was NEXRAD (in the U.S) then a scan would be produced every 1.25 minutes.
NEXRAD Radars use a lower dwell time so the precision is lower but a much faster scan (something they need when severe weather comes along.)

I find it really strange how the Metservice only does this when a disaster occurs, good on them for putting it up but for not doing it when there was no disaster at all.

Its kind of clear now, they wont do anything for the public unless something really bad has happened.

I wonder long it will take them (once the oil is cleaned up) to pull the link down again?

Hmm... it might be a 300 km scan, but I wonder why they've only supplied a cropped range of more like 60 km, i.e. in most cases, it would be hard to see what's coming before it's too late?

Thats probably because Metservice is Metservice and probably dont want to give away too much data for free when they dont get anything in return.....

Actually, it takes 7min, and there's a 30 second window in there to allow for the slight speed differences in the motors in the radars, as they wear they can slow a tad.

Apparently SE gusts reached 406 km/h at Akld Aero before midnight last night, LOL...

Boy she would be a bit hairy landing there at midnight Nev.

Culverden is showing that WNW wind gusts have been up as high as 85.5km in the last hour and there's not a breath of wind here,i know thats not right because it hasn't pushed the temps up or reduced the humidity from 95%.

Relative humidity (as opposed to absolute humidity) is relative to the temp though Richard, so 95% at +0.5C (DP 0C) doesn't seem that unusual.

Yes i agree with you there,but in Culverden's case,a 85kph WNW, 3.2deg and 95% ??,doent add up

Do you have a link to that Culverden info Richard? Can't seem to find it on MS's site.

i heard through the grapevine that this was happening. good stuff eh?!

so what was the goss on the radar. they talk about any dates?

Should be operational by about this time next year all going to plan, still to apply for resource consent.

Oh neat. Hopefully a good tropical storm moves down and gives it a good test next summer.

I'm sure I heard/read that the west coast one has already had its earth works started so when is that one executed to be operational?

From what Tony said it is already going, but obviously not available on the site yet. Maybe the change to 7.5 min updates will happen at the same time the west coast radar goes live.
