it was the very cold upper pool of air coinciding with a surface trough and convergence (forcing) that was the key...surely....
yes, two air streams running into each other, so stronger than the sea breeze type convergence. The storms were not supercells though.

although even with convergence forcing, as soon as the heating eased and the upper cold pool moved off, boy did things fizzle fast...like a sea breeze convergence does...
an interesting day...been a while !

Yes SFC temps dropped off quite fast,it was 21°C or so In Tokoroa before the trough came through then it dropped to 15°C after that.
Surprisingly it cleared quite quickly there, heaps of orphaned anvils around 6.30PM when i decided to head back.

Also, the cold upper air and upper level divergence was clearing out by 6pm.
