I know we have loads of people from Auckland and Christchurch esp. but where on earth are the people from Wellington? We should get a few of the Metservice people on here, (would be good....?)
Some west coasters would be good too.

Anyways of getting these people?

I doubt it. They would most likely claim to be "too busy".

When we were first investigating weather stations and equipment for the observatory, I contacted the metservice in Wellington via e-mail. I had a reply from a very pleasant and helpful person. She provided me with some information, then suggested I contact the Auckland weather office, as they had specialist knowledge. She even gave me the telephone number.

So I called it. A man gruffly answered:

Me: "Hello, I'm looking for information regarding weather stations and weather equipment for an observatory in the South Isla-"

Him: "Oh mate, call bloody Dick Smith!"

Then he slammed down the reciever. That's an absolutely true story.

I've been thinking we need a page or site where volunteers from different areas of the country can post weather obs in the morning, and daily reports in the evening. It would be interesting to compare this eyeball info with the stuff we get from the metservice and TV weather people, etc.

What about the weather underground for both official obs and private obs? http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/fin ... ew+zealand

I use a local station for missing data when I'm away from home eg http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... =IWAITAKE1

Cheers,

I don't know how many people Met Service employ in AK. Maybe it was a NIWA employee.

I'm pretty sure it was metservice I called. Who he actually worked for I don't know, but the number was metservice if I recall correctly.

We have dealings with NIWA in Lauder frequently, and the worst they are is "strange"! They've never been rude.

It definitely wasn't Bob. He's always been fine with me on the few occasions we've dealt with him. I don't know who the guy I spoke with was. Gwenyth Hodgson in Wellington gave me the number.

What's wrong with this site? The Adminstrator should be able to (if he wishes) easily set up another forum heading (the current and only one being "NZ Weather") called "Today's Ob's" and within that the forum subjects could be individual days. Also a great place to keep the "Monthly Summaries"?

Your thoughts?

I usually download my maps etc with a folder for each day and at the end of the month I make a folder up ie June 2004 then file all the 30 folders into it so similar could be done for the month on the forum and say after the 1st(to cover the 31st) then it can be locked under the month

It was probably blowing like a bastard from the SW in Auckland on that day and wished he'd been in Fiji :P

I just had a flashback...

When I was around 13 years old, my Geography class went on a field trip around the volcanic craters of Auckland. One we visited was Mount Victoria. Our bus pulled into the lot at the top of that hill, and we all trooped off to look at the hole in the ground at the top.

Well naturally when we were miles from anywhere the skies opened up. It was an absolute deluge, and so our teacher, a lovely old lady, told us to head for the nearest shelter, a white structure at the summit.

A very bad move. It was the weather station.

We all piled in under it and about .03 picoseconds later a guy came charging down the stairs from above and literally screamed at us. Things like "F**k off, you stupid little b******s! Get the f**k out of there! We're trying to take readings you bloody f******g idiots! F**k off out of it right now!".

He was all purple-faced and looked as if he was going to blow an artery. So we didn't hang around, but the teacher took quite an exception to his remarks, I can tell you. We all had to repeat to the headmaster what was said because they were going to make a complaint. It was fun to use that language in front of the senior school staff, knowing that we weren't going to be punished for it! :D

What is it with weathermen I wonder?!

Perhaps its not surprising there aren't many professional weatherpeople on this forum with attitudes like that. :(

I have not seen you around on this forum much lately Tony, and i for one, hope that anything I have said has not put you off, in the past too!
I think your input is most welcome and needed, please dont get put off by the comments that some people make from time to time (which was probably tongue in cheek, but the problem is with forums, you are not able to see that tongue in that cheek!)

Thanks Brian - a long time ago I was a regular poster on rec.sport.pro-wrestling - which seemed, at the time, a rather hostile and confrontational place to be, so this forum is a doddle really... :)

I do read 99% of whats here most days, and if I feel sufficiently outraged/excited/intrigued I usually comment. Just not been a lot happening lately... :)

I don't mind adding another forum - I thought you might be looking for something more "complicated" :)

That's it created as "Daily Observations".

Hey, I just asked. I also wondered whether maybe they get too much of the elements. That was a joke.

I related a couple of experiences I have had. Try not to take it personally.
