Some notes here on Derechos. We get such events in NZ occasionally,
mainly in the west, during periods of unstable disturbed westerlies.

We get them all the time usually as frontal rain is finishing just before a SW change,when its Westerly it blows a Gale from the SW often at storm force then turns back to its usual westerly where its only fresh

...sorry that term is non-applicable in Christchurch. Far too settled here, unfortunately, from things like that happening here

We're too far east.
