Upper Trough, Possible Storms, Central East NI, 23rd August
Looks like quite a strong upper trough crossing the North Island today!
Looks like some inland showers today.
Eastern BOP could be a good spot for isolated thunder/hail given there should be surface heating there today.
Anyway, we want these set ups later in spring.

Metservices T-storm outlook for reference:
Metservice wrote:Updated at 9:35am to increase risk about Tararua Ranges to MODERATE this afternoon.
The North Island is expected to be quite unstable today as an upper trough and a pool of cold air aloft move onto the central North Island during the afternoon and evening.
Cloud buildups are expected to produce scattered showers in most inland parts of the North Island, and also the northern and western South Island today. Some of these showers will be heavy from Auckland southwards, especially about the higher ground.
Isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected about Taupo, Taihape, inland Hawkes Bay and the Tararua Ranges, with a lower risk of afternoon and evening storms from Rotorua, eastern Waikato and inland Gisborne down to inland Tarnaki and the Tararuas as indicated on the chart.
There is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms about coastal Bay of Plenty from evening, especially offshore. A lower risk extends up into the outer Hauraki Gulf tonight as indicated on the chart.
Localised heavy rain and hail will accompany the thunderstorms.

Heavy showers already developing in the central North Island.
Might be worth a chase in the CNI due to storm's being isolated.....

its awesome looking at the effect the higher ground has on the uplift. Mt Te Aroha and Mt Pirongia are our two tallest peaks around here and they both were the first to produce even are cloud. Now going by the radar those buildups ontop on the Mtns are the first to drop rain in the area.
Further south it certainly looks as though thunder is on the cards this afternoon with the ammount of heating going on today.

I got two photos of the "funnel" from Grafton, will see if I can work out how to post. To be honest it didn't look like a funnel as such, just a long dangly cloud from where I was. But worth a couple of photos from my Blackberry.

There were certainly some very suspicious lower areas of cloud coming from the base of a huge CB as I drove up the northern towards Albany at around 3.15pm. Didn't see any funnels but was keeping my eyes peeled.spwill wrote:Has been a funnel cloud over Auckland, west of here.

You guys must be getting bored by all the thunderstorm activity up there
We are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bored down here with the lack of such activity.
We are so starved of such treats.
Hope we get our turn as the spring moves on into summer
Fingers and arses crossed

Odd bit of flickering going on with the storms off the eastern coast, some heavy rain going on between the Kaimais and Tauranga.

Re: Upper Trough, Possible Storms, Central East NI, 23rd August
Noticed an occasional flash in the South East direction. In the last half hour it's started occasional heavy drop sort of rain. Nothing work me getting overly motivated just yet, but you never know what it's about to bring.
