Seems to be north of us now, that's sad :( Just ordinary rain and the eventual clearance to look forward to. I can't wait :o I blame global warming for weakoning these systems [-X

Saw to flashes of lightning to the north 20 mins ago. Looks to have developed from west to east direction by radar and not from the stuff that was coming up from the south. Seems NE CHCH seen more from this.

Raining for about 1/4 hour out near Akaroa; quite heavy but no thunder or lightning as yet.

Plenty of thunder and lightning out this way but rain not overlay heavy - no sign or sound of any hail. Just had a flash and rumble almost right over the top.

Trust the thunder/lightning to come over the Blue Skies headquarters rather than the NZThS headquarters, but you are welcome to the hail ?.
Had Andrew Massie pop in to see me. Nice to see him.

No measureable rainfall here yet. Just occassional misty shower at times. City seems to be getting sheltered.

Cant beat around the bush leighton, if ya really want the good stuff ya need to chase it, if it means traveling 3 hours, so be it ;)
I went with aaron, jase and rouge and we hit up mt somers way, and crossed over into the foothills.
Couldnt be in a better spot really, as the develoing storms headed straight into that area.
That severe warning was based on an area south and up to mid and inland Canterbury, and we seemed to be right under the most intense stuff!
Unfortuantely couldnt take alot of photos as it was a messy type chase with cloud and alot of rain and hail. but plenty of video to show, witch im sure Aaron will fix up on the stormchasers website.
cheers.

I briefly went out towards Lincoln/Springston in case of some electric activity, but didn't come across anything better than backlit showers and a "gust front" when the southerly change did hit Springston with heavy rains (no hail). That "gust front" was actually funny in the way it allowed for enough sun to shine through the rain from behind and gave the impression you would drive out of the bad weather (see second pic) ... I haven't seen that before, the weather "behind" the front is usually bad enough to block the light ... :-k

Was a great hail chase! The hail was relentless, hammering down for quite a long time and torrential rain as we kept pace with the storm. Hail was possibly up to 20mm in size at the most but most stones were around 10-15mm. We pretty much were right in the core of the storm as it hit near Mount Somers then followed it to the Rakaia Gorge. We went further up to Oxford following things but the storm appeared a bit weaker for this part of the day, it started firing behind Oxford a bit more but we couldn't get up in the hills there. Saw a fair amount of lightning and some really good CG's but conditions really hampered doing any photography. While driving I couldn't hold my video camera, unfortunately for mikey lightning would go off just as he would stop recording, arghhhh.

Cloud structure was no good, hardly took any photo's as there just wasn't that much good to take. Got video though so will try edit something together soon.

Was good to be out though and good to meet you Rogue, a pretty good storm for a first chase!

Cheers
Aaron

Do you know how to get to the Ashley Gorge and Lees Valley ? By the looks of the radar I wouldn't be too surprised if that's where you saw things firing.

I see in the paper yesterday that a West Coast couple got caught up in the thunderstorm at Staveley on Sunday saying it was the worst thunderstorm they had ever experienced and it was very terrifying with huge hail and constant and vicious lightning :-s .
Must of been terrifying if they experienced their worst thunderstorm there as compared to the ones they get on the West Coast. 8-o
