It wasn't really.Cloud moved over and there was a light shower overnight.
Also there was a shower overnight and warmer air moving across which hindered any frost chances.

It got down to -2.6°C just before 2.30am then a light NW brought temps back up again. Last night was the first time this winter it's been below freezing before midnight.

Like that here. Down to minus 3.8C but up to minus 2.2C at 8am, near sun-up. It has frozen here just before midnight on the 8th July.

-2.6 Matangi
-2.5 Horsham Downs

Nothing special about those numbers. I suppose what makes them slightly special is that they are our coldest temps so far this year i believe. Usually we would have had a handful of these temps and much colder by now.

I love this type of weather so hopefully its a sign we are heading into some bigger high pressure systems with cold nights clear days.

I agree with your sentiment about cold nights and clear sunny days Jamie. Here in the UK with the much lower sun elevation in winter, an overnight minimum of -3*C if followed by a sunny day would see a max of say 4-5*C, but a walk in that cold clear air is very invigorating......if suitably attired. Usually, if the spell of weather lasts a few days, it will get progressively colder and we get a beautiful build up of rime on all the vegetation which can be a stunning sight in the sunshine.

I see Greylynn went down to 1.9C this morning, suggests ground frost for parts of Central Auckland.

I think that's 2 or 3 ground frost events for Central Auckland so far this year.

I prefer the cloudy version of Aucklands climate this time of year because I prefer warm nights, a min around 10C is okay.

I noticed ZB (Hobson Street, Auckland City) were reporting 8C at 8am. The central City does not get the chilling at night that the suburbs get due to urban heat Island.
