General October Weather
Another windy month likely? Starts of here sunny tomorrow but looks like an inversion with light WSW wed/thurs before another trough and southwesterlies, looks far better further south and in all the east.

Re: General October Weather
Fading southwesterlies, there is a Tasman low later in the week so flow will tend more NW into the week, disturbed W/NW next week at this stage, a mostly mild outlook.

Yeah but I bet you had no cool NE wind all day.
Did see Timaru at 24C at one point too, I hope we get our turn tomorrow after the 16C today here in Rangiora.

Re: General October Weather
A nice crop of elevated storms near Fiordland this morning. Warm continental air moving into the Tasman from Aussie is what leads to elevated storms over the SW of the country. Sydneys max yesterday 34C.
Looks like summery weather for the North Island next few days. Temps should break 20C in many places.

Midnight NZWP showing the warm dry airmass aloft and the cool moist air at the surface.
Low clouds here should burn back during the morning.

Pity about the cooler air closer to the surface... could have been 22/23C otherwise?NZstorm wrote:Midnight NZWP showing the warm dry airmass aloft and the cool moist air at the surface.

But still, a beautiful day with a 19C max here.

Re: General October Weather
was suprised to hear on the news last night that Westport had 82mm of rain yesterday, whereas we had 6mm. Sure, we're 70km inland from Westport, but the difference surprised me. But then I checked metservice website and it shows that yes Westport town had 82mm, but Westport airport had 39mm. That's a huge variance considering the airport is approx 3km from Westport town as the crow flies.
In saying that I don't know where the Westport town station is. maybe it's not in town as such and up the hills a bit, but that seems unlikely.

I think the rain was coming though in small but intense showers so could be isolated, my folks live at kumara junction and had the same thing with little there but down the road got drowned.

Re: General October Weather
Fog in Auckland. May get more cloud cover today after a couple of clear days.
The afternoon shower risk over the ranges Saturday afternoon could be worth a mention. Looks like from central North Island ranges to Malborough/north Canterbury ranges isolated cb's may pop up. A low thunder risk.

Re: General October Weather
Yes, going by their 'Historical data', it appears MS's Westport site generally does get considerably more rainfall than its Westport Airport site. The airport (2m asl) is very coastal, virtually strutting out to sea. This Westport News WS (18m asl), presumably in the western central township and about 2 km SSE of the airport site, recorded 52mm yesterday. While near the foothills and about 7km ESE of the airport, this Keoghan Farm WS (29m asl) recorded 75mm. So I'm guessing MS's Westport site may be a little further out of town.einzack wrote:was suprised to hear on the news last night that Westport had 82mm of rain yesterday, whereas we had 6mm. Re: General October Weather
Hope there's lots less rain on the coast next week. I expect to hire a Jucy campervan & take the boys over Arthurs Pass tomorrow. In true Jucy style, no accomodation is booked, but the planner in me is thinking about Punakaiki/Lake Rochfort/Denniston or Stockton/Lyell/Reefton/Marble Point.
I have a coat for Monday...and your forecasts confirm by expectation to be home by Wed night.

I rented a Jucy vehicle earlier in the year and it broke down. AA road recovery were excellent however I found Jucy customer service to be poor in this situation.moylanr wrote: I expect to hire a Jucy campervan :

Re: General October Weather
Models are finally lining up on the next system with low pressure development occurring out to west of North Island Monday.
Looks like cold rain/snow to about 700m for South Island Monday into Tuesday. Possible thunder for the North Island Tuesday.

Stunning day here. Temp beyond 20. Blue sky. Light to no wind. Humid. Nothing like the weather we had last October.
