Sudden strong gust from the south just now, wind quite boisterous, sky to south looks unsettled.

Crikey! I see Grey Lynn's max was 23.8C just before midday. Only 21.1C here and 21.5C yesterday.

Thundery looking again along the Alps this morning with rain extending out across the plains which made people, that I came cross, think that the weather forecast was wrong for today.??
Some Cu forms to the south and around BP this afternoon, not quite looking thunderstormic as cloud glaciating quite early with lack of 'pregnancy'
Did notice some shower activity from them

I expected that rain band and will again tomorrow afternoon/evening, its just the more bulkier CB's over the coast and Alps in the rain bands that get pushed further east more common in Spring.
I expcted to hear some of that dumping boom thunder from elevated lightning this morning as this morning revealed a rain band and a nice sun rise of colours mixed with Virga and Mamatus clouds.
Also a triple rainbow something you don't see too often.
Those CB's this afternoon John did turn into thunderstorms just offshore from the Akaroa heads, some thunder was heard around little river too with hail falling there.

Could be interesting action coming in from the next system long the Alps and into Westland. Could be 12349 lightning strikes from this, the height that was once in feet of Mt Cook/Aorangi ? :D :-$

In westport till Monday. Hoping for some action later today. High risk of thunder for this area but perhaps bit too far north for most the action.

The 50knot upper flow will push some of those cb's onto the Canterbury foothills today.

Yep, NIWA's Mangere site is currently running at 1.0C above normal.

Also one of the upper North Island's driest Octobers so far. Sowed a patch of grass-seed yesterday in the hope that yesterday's front might give it a kick-start… only managed 0.2mm. :-(

Blowing like "40 of them here" at the moment.
Poor trees that got hammering in last month's BigBlow being hammered again 8-o
Noticed a dusty blue sky looking to the SE

Very unstable day for much of the South Island next few days, if it was me I would include Canterbury plains on low risk too in potential spillover showers later on for some elevated lightning.
Similar set up tomorrow as yesterday with a W-SW flow chance of thunderstorms down the coast from Banks Peninnsula.

Quite blusterous here too: reading for Ashburton per MetService says NW 57kph, gusting to 83kph in last 10 minutes.

Very strong here. Walking back from the chookhouse, I came to complete stand-still  blown nearly backwards from a very strong gust of wind. 8-o
Edit: I've noticed that Met Service have now upgraded the NW gales for Canterbury up to warning status.

Watching the soil, from the new industrial subdivision on the former Wigram Aerodrome site, lift high into the air and cover the city. Its happened about 6 times now quite impressive. (We live up on the port hills)
Many trees down canterbury wide, power out and small fire as a result of live power lines......
Its ground hog day.

Rain just starting here now just north of Westport after an overcast morning with occassional sweeping showers. Hopefully some thunderstorms throughout the late afternoon into the evening.
