Yes some much needed rain falling here at the moment, hopefully its quite a wet week as we have become very dry with the rather dominant westerlies prior to the last couple of weeks and very little rainfall. Interestingly soils a lot drier here for same time as last year but rainfall is comfortably up on last year for the year to date, obviously longer drier periods and when its rained its rained a bit!

Models did hint at perhaps some heavy rain Wednesday into Thursday but last couple of GFS runs has this low sliding further east now so not looking like anything particularly heavy anymore, but never the less should get 30mm + before the week is out I would think.

Yes quite surprised by that actually. It looked much better yesterday when they had a low risk and now that its backed off they have put up a high risk...wait and see I guess. Steady rain here last 2 hours.

I'm amazed at how fast the hills have browned off these last few days. Badly need the rain so good that a decent drop is on its way.

Not sure what to make of these claims in yesterday's Herald…
'Record temperature a surprise after gloomy forecast' - NZ Herald
5:30 AM Monday Nov 25, 2013 - By Jamie Morton, Ben Irwin

According to MetService, Auckland reached 26C on Saturday. The previous accessible record for November was 25.5C in 1974. … Yesterday, temperatures reached 24.7C. ...
Which site are they talking about? If it's Akld Aero, as the '25.5C in 1974' ref suggests, even though the airport's previous record was actually 25.6C set in 2008, then Saturday's 25.6C (rounded to '26C') only equalled its 2008 record.

And where did Sunday's 24.7C come from? Can't be Akld Aero, as that was down to 23.2C, while Whangaparaoa was up around 25.5C.

As previously mentioned, some NIWA Nov records that did fall on Saturday included:

Code: Select all

Site 2013 Record Previous Record

Auckland, Mangere 26.8C 26.7C in 1963
Auckland, Pukekohe 26.9C 25.8C in 2008
Hamilton, Ruakura 28.4C 28.1C in 2010
Jim did mention the Akld record of 26.8C last night btw - just didn't say where, when or from whom. :(

Precisely Richard. Even there 3 day maps that they modify showed huge back off. Really don't get them sometimes. Anyhow only patchy drizzle this morning and 18mm so far.

Might be that the flow will be southeasterly, which means a Banks Peninsula rainshadow effect that shelters Chch somewhat.

Yep we got to 26.0°C at 5.00pm thanks to the W-NW change. Unusual time of day for the maximum.

up to 41.9mm for the month, but still such a low rainfall year.
haven't compared to NIWA records, but since I've been recording we had 2,217mm in 2011, 1,789mm in 2012 and so far are sitting on 1,402mm in 2013.
so very low.

I see Akld Aero finally beat its previous Nov record of 25.6C in 2008 with 25.9C yesterday.

Grey Lynn's 26.5C yesterday was also just 0.2C shy of its 2010 record.

28 mm of rain from this event with more drizzly stuff this morning, anything over 30mm now will have benefits for early summer

Apparently Ardmore Aero recorded an 81 km/h gust from the east between 12am and 1am yesterday. We only had gusts to 25 km/h here at the time.
