General May Weather

Unread post by CWUweather »

Looks a quite start for Canterbury thank god. But possibly wet for the West Coast as low in the Tasman moves in. Good chance for Canterbury to dry up for now anyway.

Jet streams looks active next week in the Tasman which means rain in the west with the chance of thunder.

May is the month when a tornado is most likely somewhere in NZ, typically in the west or north.

I'm picking that there could be a tornado around somewhere, judging by the latest situation for the month, which could lead to thunderous occasions on the West coasts of both NI and SI. :?

Chilly here in the winterless north, I see Greylynn went down to 7.5C.

Some wintry air in the models for later next week.

It's all relative of course ;)
7C is 7 degrees below the average minimum for last month, so of course it would feel chilly...

The average May minimum for Auckland is 10.2C
The only place I've lived where 7C is not chilly is London in January.

If I went out side first thing in the morning at this time of year down here and it was 7C in no way would I think that was chilly.
I was poking a bit of fun at the Northerners that's all.

Yeah just looking at the metrogram numbers for the first time this season, along way out but its throwing out some very cold numbers even a -7C 850mb temp.
I am sure the W-NW winds at the start of the week will be welcome for the plains though, a bit milder and dry but still some spill over rain likely.
Thunderstorms and hail for most of the country next week actually, upper air mid week is running in at between -20C and -25C over most of the country.
West coast of both islands will get a good hit of thunder and hail Monday/Tuesday by the looks.
Canterbury, home of good rugby and severe storms

It is VERY SW for Thursday Friday and Saturday. Might get a coastal chain shower set up for Canterbury. THK levels got down to 519 yesterday! But back to about 530 now, maybe some snow to 300-400m
