Re: General May Weather
did not look like much on the rain radar ...due to what seems to be a bit of shadowing that occurs for the radar signal for main Auckland isthmus area...I have noticed....

Re: General May Weather
Well it was for the West Coast, what I really referring too was that if I looked out of the window after it was dark, a distant flash could be seen over the mountains. There was 'one or 2' distant flashes in that direction on Monday night before the gale force NW hit here just after midnight on Tuesday morning.melja wrote:I think you may have to eat your hat too, im sure you said you would if we didn't get thunder this week

Re: General May Weather
Afternoon heating will contribute to an isolated thunderstorm risk for Auckland today. Not much CAPE there but a forecast temp of 19C would help.

Re: General May Weather
Just got back from a morning walk with about 30 seconds to spare! Could see the dark clouds moving in faster than I anticipated, so had to walk real quick

Re: General May Weather
I am on the northern tip of the stuff to my south. So i am in the updraft section of the cell and we have some incredbly turbulent sky above us at the moment. Looks very heavy to my south (hamilton). We have a more northern cell moving in behind this one so we should have some rain soon too.

Re: General May Weather
has been ongoing distant thunder all morning here until that ripper. That rumbled for about 20 seconds and viabrated the floor of the house.

Re: General May Weather
That radar image is classic of the upper jet catching that cell an blowing it over towards the south, the core build is on the western side where decent hail and or a possible funnel/ small tornado could form provided other ingrediants come into play.
Not much here in the way of rain overnight which I am sure many in the city and rural mid to north Canterbury farmers will be happy with, just 1.3mm from patchy light rain/drizzle.
Although a small wet feature has popped up on the models for this Tuesday now, delivering possibly a further 30+mm
