Major flooding in Serbia and Bosnia

Unread post by Simon Culling »

There has been a significant flood event in Serbia and Bosnia (and a number of other neighbouring countries) following heavy rainfall in the first half of May and particularly on Wednesday and Thursday of last week (14-15th May). However it has received little news coverage until today when a death toll of at least 44 has been announced. The flooding has been described as 'the worst for 100 years' and I think we are going to hear more about this unfolding event on the news over the next few days.

A sinister part is the landmines swept away by flooding and landslides -

Hello Orion. The re-exposing of minefields is a very worrying development for the citizens of Bosnia and must bring back nasty memories of the Balkan War in the early nineties. The flooding has also killed thousands of livestock the bodies of which are now being stranded as the flood water recedes and this presents a significant health hazard. As the old saying says, "when it rains.....it pours". An update from the BBC:

There is quite a good page on Wikipedia:
