These beachgoers on the beach at Novosibirsk (Siberia) got a bit of a shock when a sudden hailstorm struck. The temperature had been up to 37*C earlier on Saturday (July 12th) afternoon, but it cooled quite rapidly when the storm struck. With the hail described as up to golfball and hens egg size, they must have hurt!

Novosibirsk is in central (Asian) Russia and has a very continental climate, but 37*C seems to be near a record for this city. The Wikipedia page climate figures for 1981-2010 give 36*C as the highest temperature...scroll down a bit o the climate section. I did not realise it was the third largest city in Russia.

Good heat and moisture there. There would have been major things happening aloft for hail like that. Jet stream as well as large scale forcing.
