For all things relating to tectonic plate collisions. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis... the Pacific ring of fire and world-wide. Please create new threads for stronger earthquakes when they happen above magnitude 5.0.

At 15:36 - heard it more than felt it here but lasted a while.

Felt here in Hamilton in a high building. Was alerted by radio. Went to Geonet, they already had it up. Then 5 seconds later it arrived. Alert systems are faster than the seismic waves now.

6th floor of CCC building sway on for about 90 seconds. Not severe but loooooong. Deep centered so St Arnaud dodged a bullet there I'd say

Interesting to see how extraordinarily widespread the Felt Reports are.
In Ashburton I noticed a vibration in the floor but thought it was due to passing traffic, others nearby recognised what it was however.

I was in the garden when my youngest daughter came running out to ask me did i feel it,i didn't feel it,didn't notice the birds going quiet and apart from the sparrows, the tree frogs and the dairy cows been taken in for milking there were no other noises or rumbles from under ground,so,a case of 'bugger, i missed it' >_<

Like Stephen, heard it more than felt it. I was inside sweeping the floor and as a local contractor was outside trimming the shelter-belts, I thought it was his machine, probably stalled and causing a vibrating sound, which I heard, but then as I went outside, his machine was making a different sound, so I thought it may of been an aircraft taking off from the airport. I didn't think it may of been earthquake related, as it was a different sort of sound to the sound of earthquakes that I have experienced here over the last 4 years.

I find it interesting that none of the earthquakes over the last few year have had any noise with them, you fella's heard it and were further away from the its center than me,yet i was in a very quiet environment with my head close to the ground and heard nothing.
