http://www.weather-display.com/windy/gb/wap/index.wml

but not much, only about 8c or so
its the speed of the wind or the trend of the wind, or the wind direction that people are needing, to decide wether to go kite fishing, boating, paragliding, you name it....and it can be quite different on this side to the auckland side....

Yes, thats cool. I'm due to upgrade my cell phone. I'll have to look into this wap thing. I think those phones are still expensive though. :(

if you have an old telecom phone, they have a system where they swap it for the latest new phone for only $50
good deal, we did that with the wifes phone!

Rikcy, who lives near you , has a wap page too:
http://www.portunus.net.nz/weather/wap/index.wml

but we need to get him to use the latest version of the software so people can see the graphs :)

Yeah?

What's the catch? There has to be a Tele$cum sting in the tail, like $100/month minimum or similar

[wanders off to find out more]

Cheapest I could find were the $xxx /month plans.

Currently, I pay no monthly fee and since I only use my phone for occasional calls out (mostly receive for callouts) It would have to be a pretty special deal to get me to change. By all means post a URL that would tempt me

You can purchase a WAP enabled phone for under $400 now. But the sales rep at Vodafone said they were no longer promoting WAP as a function as they did not think much of it. :? I was told the wap service is limited and slow to download.

Anyway, I have come across this URL on WAP if anyone wants more info.

We also tried out various solutions along these lines but in the end they were always prohibitively expensive, both to implement and maintain.

hi
very little cost involved for me to have a wap weather page availble for the public to view....its just a small text file , and 2 small graph files, uploaded to a ftp server where my weather page is.

I guess it depends upon how how often you intend to upload data. For our purposes, it needed to be often if it was to be even remotely useful. As a result the bill would have been horrendous. (Bear in mind that this was a couple of years ago).

For significantly less than the projected monthly cost, we were able to purchase and install standard 802.11b WLAN equipment and transmit data every minute, 24 hours, affordably, a solution which serves us reliably still.

I hasten to qualify my statements by adding that the pricing regime may well have changed since then. It would be nice to think that a Telecoms company has become less rapaciously greedy, but it's hard to imagine! :-)

humm, seems to be some confustion here
you dont use a cell phone to update the data so that it can be used by cell phone uses
you just need an internet connection and a Web page site

there are so many knockers in NZ!

OK Brian, no need to label us as "knockers" just because some of us aren't convinced that something is workable for all of us.

I thought you were referring to the cellular-based services. If I'm wrong about that then I'm sorry. No need to take things so personally.

So what is the difference between the way most of us update our webpages now and the method you are offering?

huh?
you have still missed the point altogether

the web page viewable on a wap enabled phone is updated like any other weather page via ftp, etc, its just a sepcial type of html format that is viewable with a wap enabled phone
(and is not viewable via normal web browser unless via a wap simulator like shown at the start of this thread.

simple as that
nothing complicated
nothing expensive

OK, I'm with you now. I saw the word "cellphone" and assumed it was just an extension of the usual extortionate Telco service regime.

So it's really another way of viewing weather pages, only on a cellphone.

The charges would just be similar to text-messaging I guess?
