I heard my first one of this summer season yesterday in Auckland (7 October 2015)

Thankfully we only get one maybe two per summer here, got a mate who lives in the bush 40kms north of Kaikoura, they are so bad there they hurt ya ears

yes, I know. :-$
In areas of native bush where cicadas are quite prominent, the wearing of ear-muffs is needed as a safety issue. Noise from cicadas can be as deafening as using a chain-saw with out ear-muffs. :eek:
