Boring Weather in Australia?

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

The weather must be that boring in Australia that the Aussie Mailing List is receivng emails to it enquiring whether or weather or not, there is anyone there?
It's got that bad that Jimmy Degura from AWSA has suggested this, for the mean-time

Let's talk about some of your favourite storm or weather you would like to see this season. Just a wishful thing:)

To ensure it is not a one liner, try and describe the structure this ideal
storm or weather would look like, where you would like to see it, the
precipitation it will bring.

Come on folks be creative.

At least here with this forum, we have always something to talk about, whether anything weatherwize is happening or not :)

Sounds like some yahoo groups and go totally OT as they have nothing new to say with the constant high pressure over Australia

They're actually getting some storms just off the coast of NE NSW / SE QLD at present (or did for the past two days anyway), and a few just on the coast around those areas. But yes, overall it had been a very boring period over there, here to!

Some guys have taken some great looking lightning photo's from the recent storms. Here's a link to the weatherzone threads with some shots of recent lightning:

This threads quite good, just have a browse through the 5 pages:

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/cgi-bin/u ... 001290;p=1

And this thread from this page (23) onwards:

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/cgi-bin/u ... 04458;p=23

And yes thats me posting on there, thought I'd join their forum and see what things are like in Oz ;)

Here's some teasers: :D

I don't know whether this is of interest, but some of the reasons that Australia is not crawling with big (international) observatories are:

1) Statistically speaking, the outback experiences no greater number of clear nights as somewhere such as, say, the MacKenzie Country.

2) The constant presence of dust in their upper atmosphere limits them severely from an astronomical perspective, particularly in the now very important IR band.

3) No real mountains means no way to sneak above the worst the lower atmosphere has to offer.

I'm off to Melbourne the week after next so given my history of WX on trips I expect to induce a cold outbreak (but not cold enough for snow), lots of fog, freezing rain and some strong wind thrown in at times.

Wellington may get to experiance something similar on Wednesday and Thursday of next week as well.

I thinking of becomming a professional 'drought buster'.

Cheers,

Well how true could my prediction be? On Saturday Melbourne had their coldest August day for 26 years according to the TV news tonight.
It was freezing cold and raining - I'd stayed back an extra day to have a good walk around the city - so much for my plans... ended up spending the afternoon in the airport sitting with a book and rain slashing at the windows.

Saw some lightning last night on the flight home (as well as a meteor which is the first I've ever seen from an aircraft) Air NZ gets top marks for their Airbus 320 - good windows. ;)

Cheers,
