Warm Gales, Rain & Snow - Jul 22-24
The next system at the weekend has severe wind potential for the North Island. Looking interesting on 12z gfs.

Re: General July Weather
Looking at the charts for Saturday I'm picking the Hurricane's vs Sharks game on Saturday night in Wellington to be one of the windiest matches ever played, some crazy numbers for the bottom of the north island being thrown up for wind gusts!!

Re: General July Weather
Looking like an active cold front will cross the North island Saturday evening into Sunday morn with some big wind gusts. There is a chance of a severe convective risk with the front but instability is far from certain atm. Good moisture but may be a tad too warm at 500mb. Have to see how models pan out.Bradley wrote:Looking at the charts for Saturday I'm picking the Hurricane's vs Sharks game on Saturday night in Wellington to be one of the windiest matches ever played, some crazy numbers for the bottom of the north island being thrown up for wind gusts!!

Re: General July Weather
Does look like the storm will peak about or just after game time. I wonder what level of wind would be needed for a game to need to be delayed on safety grounds? Will make interesting viewing but not sure will ever see quite the visual effect of wind in that "new" stadium as at the old Athletic park. That ground was built on a saddle between two hills and aligned North/South? No wonder it caught the wind.Bradley wrote:Looking at the charts for Saturday I'm picking the Hurricane's vs Sharks game on Saturday night in Wellington to be one of the windiest matches ever played, some crazy numbers for the bottom of the north island being thrown up for wind gusts!!

I wouldn't get too excited yet. Top NW gusts these days have generally been significantly lower than 30+ years ago.cbm wrote:Does look like the storm will peak about or just after game time. I see it is currently 25C in Sydney, the warm air moving across NZ this weekend. Overnight Saturday into Sunday looks unusually warm for Auckland, 17C showing at 3am, dewpoint16C ( GFS) but the warm air is on the move.

Re: General July Weather
Looks like potential for good blow over the North Island with the front early tomorrow. Modelled 850mb wind 65knots gives an idea of the calibre of the upper flow.
Looking squally over the west of the country tomorrow with colder airmass moving in.

Re: General July Weather
I highly doubt it, my station recorded a high of 18.9C and i would have thought kaikoura would be very similar given the NW influenceNZstorm wrote:Is the 24C recorded in Kaikoura today believable? I am highly sceptical.

Re: General July Weather
Yes, 23.5C at Kaikoura Aero today according to MS. Kaikoura can get some pretty extreme fohn temps, like the 23.5C Kaikoura Peninsula also recorded last month.NZstorm wrote:Is the 24C recorded in Kaikoura today believable? I am highly sceptical.
MS also had 21.9C at Napier Aero today, which equals its July 1998 record, since records began there in 1974. Napier's Nelson Park also recorded 21.9C in 1998, beaten only by its 22.9C in 1954 and 23.1C in 1942, since uninterupted records began there in 1905.

Re: General July Weather
I am in Kaikoura this weekend, and though it was warm earlier it didn't feel quite like 24 on the peninsula or in the town. Still 18C now at the airport, wind picking up after not being too strong all day.

This was expected for this WE. So, congratulations to those forecasting a warm Saturday.Nev wrote:

Might have been one of the worst at the Stadium, but that doesn't go back that far. Compared to games like the one at Athletic Park in a southerly gale in August 1961, it would fall short.

On the graveyard @ Auckland airport, gusting 37kts at present and temp snuck upto 19C briefly, light showers keeping the dust down! Thunderstorms activity out west, risk of a flash or two between 3am and 6am.

General July Weather
Almost 2.30am here in Glenfield, and the temp has risen to 17.8 from 17.3 at 2.00am. Raining, blustery, and a couple of rumbles of thunder from the west.

Re: General July Weather
Yes, MS have 20.1C for Kaikoura Peninsular yesterday arvo, compared to 23.5C for Kaikoura Aero about 8 km down the coast in Peketa. Temp differences between the 2 sites like this don't appear to be all that unusual. This inland Kaikoura PWS about 300m asl also recorded 22.5C yesterday, which seems to add some credibility to the airport reading.Chris W wrote:I am in Kaikoura this weekend, and though it was warm earlier it didn't feel quite like 24 on the peninsula or in the town.
