General August Weather
Thought I would start a thread as we are nearing a new month, except for the potential cold start to the month what is everyones general feeling that August will have in store for us?

Re: General August Weather
I see higher pressure south of NZ so a better chance of snow perhaps next couple of weeks.

I think it will generally follow the same trend that we have seen for July apart from the odd SW. Overall be milder than normal

Re: General August Weather
yes, there is a polar high getting parked up way to the south of NZ to shovel cold air north towards NZ
which will get swept onto NZ at times
so , not really a continuation of July pattern in that regard
so expect colder outbreaks interspersed with narrow ridges followed by warmer northerlies....sort of thing..
time will tell...

I think the high to the south of NZ and the Tasman Sea low next week create a slight chance for heavy snow somewhere next week, ingredients need to come together though.

Re: General August Weather
Certainly an unusual winter scenario from next week. A period of NE for the north so it will be relatively warm and wet there. The low in the Tasman and strong NE flow may keep any very cold air off the S Is for now. Really sick of the rain up north here. Missing the frosty clear days

Re: General August Weather
Quite an active polar trough sweeping across the North Island later tomorrow with Auckland well placed to catch some thunder/squalls/hail.
I see subtropical moisture in the modelling over the upper North Island on Thursday which poses the risk of downpours. The ground here is so saturated there will be lots of run off/possible flooding. I went for a run today and the local parks semi submerged.

Great looking low to our SE, and then we have the incoming front from the West.

A heavy shower crossing here, I noticed a very distant lightning flash earlier this evening out west.

Isolated thunderstorm activity on the incoming front is perhaps something to watch for the Auckland area next hr.

Re: General August Weather
Some light rain here currently, looks like some possible heavier falls moving in.

That skinny rainband earlier fed 14mm over our house in about 1.5 hrs, yet a nearby PWS only about 1 km further south got less than 5mm.David wrote:Some light rain here currently, looks like some possible heavier falls moving in.
