I see that GFS is going for quite a decent polar outbreak mid next week with 850hpa temps of -8C for around 12-18 hours over Canterbury though EC is only going for a moderate cold front for that time, lets see if GFS can outperform EC for once and not downgrade the system over the next few days to fall in line with EC as per it's normal form...

EC keeps the very cold air just south of NZ but something to watch.
I'm in Wanaka next week, was hoping for sunny weather, Monday afternoon looks okay at this stage then cloudiness until Thursday.

I hope it works. Getting sick of the persistent boring settled weather in Canterbury :banghead: o_O
Considering of leaving the forum because of this. o_O

I don't understand why you would do that because the weather is boring.

No, I've decided I will stick with it but I do plan to end my West Melton Blog at the end of this year.
Anyway, to stick with this topic, the models do look fruitful for the end of next week. Wait and see what happens.

Been great having a dry week with plenty of sunshine. Looks like some really wet weather possibly on the way mid-late week.

As expected over the last 3 runs GFS has now fallen in line with EC and no decent cold front predicted mid next week now...

A cold upper trough may deliver a lightning strike or two to northern areas tomorrow night. Not much instability but cold upper air means charge separation always possible with any cb that can occur. 500mb -24C.

Looking like rain on Wednesday with a warm front inbound.

First time I've seen no subzero morning temps from MS anywhere on Your-weather for awhile, although Hastings may have come close?

Back in auckland now, spent the last week in Horopito (10km from Ohakune). The weather was just incredble, bluebird days every day and the snow was amazing.. Heres a couple of pics from out West at Whakapapa..

Was out there on Westridge Wednesday last week. Certainly a good run of weather. Bluebird again today, snow getting a bit older now as no fresh overnight despite predictions. But still a good time.

Light drizzle here.
Bit of a worry that here we are at the end of Aug and still no major rain event for Canterbury, the water table here is lower than last winter.

Same here too. Despite a couple of "normal" months earlier in the year we are running about 40% of ave rainfall for the winter, and even less this month (25%). Port Hills tracks are bone dry and dusty, and sports fields around town that are usually damp or muddy this time of year are rock hard and dry like summer

I see MS have put a 'Watch' out for Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel for possible heavy rainfalls and severe NW'ers over the next 48 hrs or so…

HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG NORTHWESTERLY WINDS OVER THE UPPER NORTH ISLAND

A trough moves southeast across the North Island tonight, bringing widespread rain, with brief heavy falls in the north. A deep low is expected to approach the country tomorrow, bringing significant rain to many parts of New Zealand during Thursday and Friday, and also strong northwesterly winds over the North Island.

This Watch is for the possibility that rainfall accumulations could exceed short duration warning amounts (eg. 50mm in 6 hours or 70mm in 12 hours) for the following areas ....

AUCKLAND and COROMANDEL PENINSULA: This evening and overnight, and again from Thursday afternoon to the early hours of Friday.

NORTHLAND: From late Thursday morning to the early hours of Friday.

People in all these areas are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts, as parts of this Watch may be upgraded to a full warning, and further areas could be added.

A big jet stream and subtropical moisture tomorrow. A chance of elevated thunderstorms with this type of set up.
