Cloudy and windy ENE day here today with people saying "It's Freezing outside", which I kept telling them that it wasn't necessarily so, because of the cloud cover and the NE wind and there was no ice forming, also the temperatures weren't cold enough for it to be freezing. o_O

31mm to 9am here, including fog that's just lifting now. I see Grey Lynn's up to 37mm.

Also to 9am, MS have 32mm at Whangaparaoa, 24mm at Akld Aero and 49mm at Whitianga Aero.

Possible Elevated Thunderstorms for Northland down to Central Waikato from mid evening with risk increasing early morning for North to central Waikato.

Taking a parcel from 900hpa at 9 PM NZDT reveals instability due to near saturation of airmass, mid level jet starts kicking in later into the night and into the early morning dragging more moist air to 650hpa. Good upper level Jet sits over Northland, and down into the Waikato at 300hpa.

Quite a dynamic setup tonight for sure, SFC charts dont show this event well, upper level analysis is needed to pick it up.

Main key here is the moisture at upper levels to breach the saturated adiabatic lapse rate and get enough charge seperation. Perhaps not a good night photography session with any Lightning as there is going to be plenty of rain with any storm with high preciptable water values.

Attached: Tonight Forecast Sounding at 9 PM tonight. (parcel lifted at 900hpa)

Bit of a worry that here we are at the end of Aug and still no major rain event for Canterbury, the water table here is lower than last winter.
This morning run of EC is looking good though Richard, 30-40mm for places like Christchurch and even 25mm for places further north like Culervden, let's see if it actually happens now!! EC usually does pretty well with SW flows which this one will be so that is a positive...

Shockingly dry on my run up the Port Hills this afternoon. Its really getting quite serious. 20-30mm tomorrow (if it eventuates) and then nothing again just won't cut it, we need a few weeks of above average falls to get on track for decent spring growth

Latest run of EC has dropped moisture down to around 20mm for Christchurch and around 10-12mm for Culverden, not good news unfortunately

...well that's global warming for yer
..things looked fruitful initially but when we get to the actual event, nothing much really happens. It's been like that in Canterbury this year, which at the moment looks like to one of the most uneventful years for weather in the history of my weather records which I first began in 1988. Looks like the NZ Thunderstorm Society will have to close down because of nothing here to keep the society going. 8-o
Might start up a weather reporting society of weather event based in Geraldine, or something like that. might have to think about that? :-k

Yeah, MS also have Whenuapai, the Harbour Bridge, Whangarei and Kaikohe at 18C around 10:30pm.
Amazing… :-)

Edit: I see Akld Aero also shot up to 18.3C just before midnight and Whenuapai up to 18.5C, so may have been higher earlier this morn. Whangarei also still over 18C at 6am this morn.

The weather over the last year or so would some what match that of the last NZ Thunderstorm Society AGM, a complete nonevent.

The general weather outlook looks more stable/ drier.
Have been in Wanaka this week, a cloudy mild weather week for Wanaka, no frost at all.
