Nice animation from the RAMMB's Himawari Loop of the day showing the clearance of fog and stratus giving way to smog yesterday:

The observed sounding from Wenjiang (Chengdu) shows a MASSIVE winter time inversion typically observed in inland Asia. Policy makers in China really are pushing ___ up hill wanting to reduce smog in their mega cities.

The image takes a while to load, but it is worth the wait. Thanks for posting.
Interesting comparison between the Chinese current experience with high smog levels and Western efforts to reduce smog over the past few decades in this pdf:

Air quality in the UK has significantly improved since the Second World War, but recent problems have stemmed from the big increase in diesel cars on the roads. The Government promoted them 20 years ago by reducing fuel taxes on diesel because they were deemed to produce less GW gases than petrol vehicles, but unfortunately, the much large particle size of the emissions has had an effect on public health shown by a significant increase in respiratory problems especially amongst the young and old.
