Met Service and Daniel on TV One's weather tonight seems a high likelihood of a thunderstorm somewhere in Canterbury tomorrow. I'm, going for it with a 4 out of 5 chance for tomorrow.
Some indicators don't look good but others do

MetService tweeted earlier that storms should start to build in Canterbury around 3pm. Maybe 5-6pm for Christchurch in that case.

We will have to wait and see.
Gone NW here now with humidity levels dropping, so I've lowered my chances to 3 out of 5.

down in timaru at a famileys place, all ready and set to go. very warm down this way at present. keeping an eye out towards mt peel way for the usual storms to cross over to the east first before the southerly change moves up

Light northerlies (NW/NE) and mid-twenties across town, looking good for the southerly to meet and destabilise things later.

Think there might be a few out. Finishing up in the office at 3:30pm will see what's happening then. Not convinced today warrants a high risk, but you chase anyway hoping I'm wrong lol

There is some CU forms around very low topped as its NW here, but i suspect its lighter winds further south maybe a surface southerly with those line of showers near Ashburton.
This would be brief and boot out the NWer as its meant to do and onshore winds should develope as the ridge opens up, whether there's enough instability around this evening and a NE will determine storms on the east coast.
Next 3-4 hours we will know

Up to 5 out of 5 now. Despite the NW at present the incoming southerly looks like a good set up now for the sound of thunder to be heard.

I went out for a brief chase down to Rakaia but didn't really see anything, still some heavy showers about locally and quite pleasent on 16c eventhough its a light SSE.
Main front to the south through south canterbury now is looking juicy, something to keep watch for.

All thunderstorm potential now cancelled.
Might be a better chance tomorrow.
