Getting those in Raglan this morning, albeit a bit more punchy but still weak with heavy rain and Hail......

Just come back from Mt. Cook/Aoraki today.
Beautiful day up there after going through the clagg and rime and frost on the trees through Burkes Pass.
Lotsa snow around and it was impressive to see the snow being blown off the mountain range tops by the incoming westerly winds way up there.

Today the NW wind came up about 2.00pm then at 5.00pm a weak SW change, by 7.00pm the temp was down to 5deg and i thought we were in for a frost, but by 9.30 the NW is back and its warmed again to 9deg.

Looking more and more likely the weekends weather system is going to delver substantial amounts of rain to a very wet Canterbury. For this area one more rain will get a stream flowing through our place that has not flowed for three years, thats when you know you are in an extremely wet period.

I expect the weekend system will deliver good thunder chances here.

EC has been quite consistent on this being a non event for mid Canterbury with places like Culverden only forecast to receive 12mm for the weekend and Christchurch 2mm - time will tell I guess

There's a pattern on metvuw where if the evening model are not been consistent over a number of days its more likely to change, this weekends system has not been like that.

Yep whatever happens one of those 2 models will have to break their usual pattern, I don't remember EC getting a forecast like this wrong 2 days out and GFS turning out to be right - first time for everything though!

Some big blow ups in the Tasman tonight. Amazing. I haven't seen an active front like this since Spring 2002-2003.

Yes warm alright, 16.6deg at that same time, did get down to 10deg at midnight though.

GFS still on for a wet weekend for much of the country

There was very moist air in the central/north Tasman and those thunderstorms have gone north into the moisture, drier air over us.
Keep a watch on Saturday morning.

Very slow season for Ruapehu this year. Sitting below the 1.5m snow depth mark with September fast approaching, usually would be easily sitting around 2-2.5m by now. Heading down next Sunday so here's hoping for some interesting weather! Or at least some fresh snow..

I normally do lots of day trips in August to the mtn. It's very slim pickings this August for fine days. So much so that I haven't been yet this year.

Arthur's Pass up to 113mm so far today. Can see some very lumpy looking cloud sitting there on satellite pics.

Hard to read this weekends system. Looks to be dialled back and nothing out of the ordinary, BUT it wont take much to create a few hassles around here. Heathcote is still in flood from Monday mornings 25mm

Thunder on the cards for the upper North Island later today. Looks probable that convection will develop on a warm front moving south later today. An upper trough moving in as well. Auckland is certainly in the risk zone.

Tomorrow mornings front looks a rainy mess with some embedded thunder. Further cold air convection in the afternoon over Northland/Auckland.

Foggy morning in Auckland. Interesting NZstorm that Metservice thinks any activity will mostly be offshore, they have Auckland outside the thunder risk zone.
