Thanks for your post, Nev. You are correct about the METARS - I got the date wrong as Tuesday was the 13th and not the 12th and 17*C was the highest half hourly temperature for that day. Interestingly, the airport reported a temperature of 22*C in its METARS for the 14th (Wednesday).

Our garden is on show today.
Clouded up now with the southerly but not that cold, well, yet?

Yeah, warmer on Wednesday arvo, with 22.3C at Wellington Aero and 21.4C at Kelburn.
No mention of NIWA's 24.8C at their Greta Pt campus site though… :-s

Been a great run of weather here the last several days, plenty of sun and getting to 22C most days. Photo from Hunua ranges this morning, overlooking Cossey's Dam.

Southerly change tomorrow may bring a few thunderstorms along the Canterbury coast. Looking at gusting 80km which will be fun!

Twin upper tropospheric cyclonic vortices over NZ and Se OZ mid week, calling all the shots over lower and surface layers. The cold core cyclone moving into SE OZ is a very dangerous set up. This will trigger a warm moisture advection scenario from the simmering Tasman and almost certainly have a bombogenesis impact near the east coast of Tasmania, Victoria and NSW. No Mariner will won’t to be Bass Strait and Tasman by Thursday. This extratropical cyclone will start to impact NZ next weekend coinciding with king tides. Interesting week ahead

It did, there, Steve, with some events happenings a bit more than expected, in some places but nothing here.
Never heard any thunder whatsoever. Next week looks interesting as well.

I see a small risk for thunderstorms popping up over mid/ north Canterbury tomorrow afternoon. More so north Canterbury where there looks to be a convergence going on, so perhaps out your way Richard??

Next week looking massive rainfall-wise for Canterbury with the last few runs of EC going for between 100-200mm for large swathes on Canterbury from Sunday-Thursday including Christchurch...

Yes. Very low surface borometer pressures look likely for a while yet. 8-o
More wet weather/ storms coming with high preesure zones moving east to the south of NZ?

200mm this side the alps is rare. GFS backing this up however, with 110mm for CHCH over the next 10 days and more against the foot hills.

Yes GFS is in line with EC with 150mm+ for large parts of Canterbury, so many things can change though over the next 4 days so I’ll just get out TC’s popcorn and watch with interest

I feel sorry for the MS Met analyst who has to draw up the surface chart this weekend. This Tasman cyclonic gyre has countless fronts and troughs with a rather large synoptic foot print, including 2 upper cyclonic vortexes. Throw in the king tides and its a mother nature washing machine, full cycle.

Lotsa bubbly CU congestus forms here at the moment but they look like the ones that produce drizzle if anything.
Wet overnight and this morning with 16.2mm here.

Something on the radar now and dark toward the 4 Peaks area.
No good for a photo as the sun is shining directly from that direction [-X
