That cell that drifted down behind Levin got rather intense over the Tararua’s from posts I saw on Twitter from people over the hill. No thunder heard in Wellington, but as the cell collapsed to the NE of town, it pushed out a strong burst of wind that forced the rain over town. We were bathed in sunlight at the time. So it resulted in an intense rainbow!

Rain radar from 740pm, about 10-20 mins before I took the photos:

The white boat did pass right through the rainbow. Wonder if they bought a lotto ticket on way home :-k

That Tararua storm passed over us in Palmy North at about 4 pm, producing a nice little gust front with a roll cloud and quite a striking change from calm and 18C to a strong northerly and 10C within 15 mins or so. It certainly looked pretty intense over the hills.

The storm here was intense between Culverden and here, would say there would have been 40+ mm given there was 10mm here and we were well and truly on the side of the rain part of the storm. Been a few years since a storm moved from the N, most come from the NW. I think it may have been rotating also because as it got closer the S wind changed a easterly that blew parallel to the front of the storm

TCu banked up against the Seaward Kaikouras, I can't show it as my camera's images are too large for the uploader but it is impressive.

I found my misplaced SD card today so here's some photo's of the Tararua Storm. This thunderstorm was intense looking over the Tararua Ranges and it was moving quickly. It looked like an intense Wellington southerly front.

Some of it got to Levin and it brought light to moderate winds and moderate rain... wish I'd done a time lapse of it going over the Tararua Ranges!
