Battening down the hatches for Hagibis
Greetings. I escaped to Japan from the SoCal firepit just in time for a supposed "super typhoon". Yay. It's forecast to hit over the long weekend and many Japanese people have long-held plans to be out of town (and a lot of weddings), so there's a fair bit of grumbling going on around the place. The good news is every other typhoon I've experienced in Japan was similarly predicted to be a major event and every one of them turned out to be nothing much more than a bit of rain and a stiff breeze. Perhaps Hagibis will likewise turn out to be another fizzer? We'll see.

Thanks, but I'm interested in the typhoon, not rugby.
Local temps have rocketed today after cool early autumn weather. Fine and calm so far, but hot.

Re: Battening down the hatches for Hagibis
All the best in riding out the typhoon. Latest daylight sat pic showing its still a beast but has some dry air incrusion outside the eyewall which should have a marginal weakening effect today along with increased wind shear. Good spread of models showing 300 to 500mm near Yokohama on the north west side of the eye in a short period, so flash flooding could be a big issue as well as wind.

It'll be interesting to see if this one lives up to the hype or if it, too, will devolve into nothing more than a spot of bad weather. So far nobody here seems to be overly concerned, but it definitely bears watching.

Re: Battening down the hatches for Hagibis
High cloud has arrived, and it's unpleasantly warm, certainly for mid-October. Very still, though. People are quietly making preparations and train services are scheduled to be reduced or halted for the duration, but there have been no disruption of anything important yet.
Also, seeing it's October, the bats are now hibernating but one of their favourite snacks has returned with a vengeance: bloody mozzies.

The rain has begun here in central-eastern Japan, but it's still disgustingly sultry outside. (Remember life before A/C? Ugh...)

So far nothing more than a light breeze and steady light raining falling throughout the night.

Re: Battening down the hatches for Hagibis
Looking at the latest water vapour image, Hagibis still showing significant strength around the core and not much dry air incrusion. Absolute water bomb if it maintains this structure. I would think wind gusts will start to pick up around Tokyo and Yokohama in the next few hours, sustained winds after 5pm local time. The worst side of the typhoon's winds is the SE quadrant, latest modelling suggests this will hit Tokyo and Yokohama after 8pm local time.
James Reynolds and Josh Morgerman (iCyclone) are now on the hunt.

Re: Battening down the hatches for Hagibis
Not much happening down here in lower-central-eastern Japan. Just the occasional moderate wind gust and some light rain, but that's about it so far. Looks as if Hagibis stayed mostly out at sea, skirting the coastline, and any action must be further north.

To be honest, a 5.3 isn't that big of a deal in Japan, especially one that far out to sea.tornado wrote: Sat 12/10/2019 23:55omg. why are nateral disasters hitting japan at this time. rwc2019. i know that japan is earthquake/tsunami prone but still?
