Re: Vancouver heat wave
Not sure if the city of Vancouver has broken its record (38.3°C), yet - the official site at the Airport (which admittedly is right on the coast) had a maximum of 32.3°C on Saturday. Inland, its a different matter and the Fraser Valley did indeed record its first ever 40°C+ temperature with 40.7°C at Cultus Lake.
The heat is expected to peak Sun/Mon, so most of these figures will likely be exceeded. An historic heatwave for this area with the obvious public health implications.

Re: Vancouver heat wave
Sunday was a very hot day in the Pacific NW, and if confirmed, this temperature (46.6°C or 115.9°F) at Lytton is a new Canadian record and beats the old figure of 45.0°C at both Yellow Grass and Midale (both in Saskatchewan) set way back in 1937. Other site records were also broken in Canada and the NW of the USA and it could be a little warmer today.
Lytton is about 100km NE of Vancouver and a second EC site in the area recorded 45.2°C as a maximum.

Re: Vancouver heat wave
Was this high temperature recorded in a proper Stephenson Screen or on a thermometer which could be on someone's back porch?
I notice that the heatwave is also continuing in east Europe/Russia with temperatures in the high 30's.

Lytton in BC now at 49.4C - they could break 50C at this rate which would be incredible for 50 degrees north of the equator!

Re: Vancouver heat wave
I see its due to a stuck meandering jet stream, i.e diving sharply south then north further east
and has created a heat dome (i.e very warm upper temperatures)
these stuck and meandering (i.e sharp dives south then north) have been more common lately in the northern hemisphere (they have caused the polar outbreaks in the winter for eastern USA at times too)

Re: Vancouver heat wave
The heat dome is somewhere between a 1 in 1000 and 1 in 10,000 year event (based on standard deviations off past observations). Been very dry there lately (La Nina). The heat will likely spread into the mid-west over the next few weeks. Some similarities to the 1936 heat wave which has been the outlier there (up until now).

Sad to hear that this town was destroyed by fire with the heat, just like Ohau Village.Bradley wrote: Wed 30/06/2021 11:43 Lytton in BC now at 49.4C - they could break 50C at this rate which would be incredible for 50 degrees north of the equator!
