Old family slides - hoar frost in Central Waikato
I have just seen for the first time some old family slides from the period 1960 to 1972. These were likely uncommon enough conditions that it warranted a photo in the days of film when every photo was a cost. These seem to show genuine hoar frost within 20km of Hamilton city. I remember seeing a hint of ice accumulation on bushes above ground some time in early 2000's but nothing like this. Nowdays seem to be limited to ground frost only, sometimes fog does form while temp is below zero as it did just a couple of weeks back, but it is too shortlived to make things look like this anymore.

Thanks for posting these lovely old shots. Is that freezing fog in the last photo? - that would explain the frost/rime on the bushes.

Yes, still sometimes have fog form when the temperature is below zero, it seems to be when slightly warmer, moister air arrives when ground is cold after a frost. But the temperature quickly struggles up to a few degrees above zero when that happens, so no ice is deposited. I can't remember ever seeing ice that thick on above ground bushes and trees in my lifetime.
