Taupo Volcanic Activity

I thought this was worth a mention. The first time the alert level has been changed I believe.

There have been 17 previous episodes of unrest over the past 150 years. Several of these were more severe than what we are currently observing at Taupō. None of these episodes, or the many other episodes which would have occurred over the past 1800 years before written records were kept, ended in an eruption. The last eruption at Taupō volcano was in 232 AD ± 10 years. The chance of an eruption at Taupō remains very low in any one year.
So I take it the other 17 episodes were before the level systems was introduced :-k

It seems that way. Media are all over it of course. Interesting nonetheless.

I bet Geonet deliberated for a while over this. Tough job trying to be conservative whilst not alarming the public. Especially with this volcano! No doubt will get a bit of attention around the world as well

Wow, wouldn't want to live there right now (or be reliant on the Waikato River for drinking water).

Loss of Hydro generation will also affect all of us if this escalates.

Main quake upgraded to 5.6! Wonder if it’s just coincidence or the recent movement of magma underground had destabilised a fault line 🤔

The only larger relatively shallow quake that I can find directly under the caldera itself was an estimated M6.0 in 1895.

Looks to have created a decent sized "surge" on the lake.

Will be interesting to see if Geonet post an article on the quakes impacts. I am sure they are out and about have a good old look around!

Looks like the bigger quake may have generated a small local surge

https://www.1news.co.nz/2022/12/01/phot ... lPv-07hotI

Pretty worrying night for locals I can only imagine

Still shaking like a leaf under the lake too with very regular small EQ's

Tsunami in Lake Taupō as measured by Niwa gauges at both ends of the lake. Time is one hour out due to NZST.

Amazing. Last night after being woken by the quake I went searching for lake level gauges online but couldn’t find any. I was a sneaky suspicion there would be water surges.

A link to the initial analysis report by Geonet on the impact on the quake to the lake and surrounding area. Makes for an interesting read.

https://www.geonet.org.nz/news/LuzOzDmQcQUUmdeiL67oX

And DO check out the ground deformation graphs in @rogue's post prior to this one!

I captured screen grabs of the last 30days readings for TGHO (Horomatangi Reef) GPS Station for the record as they will eventually roll off the graphs.
