Canterbury T-storms - Nov 25-26
This TCU line is sliding in towards the city not too bad tops, I see there is a small shower line developing on radar.

Re: General November Weather
I’ve been watching them from down here. Some decent height to them as well. Stunning day here.Storm Struck wrote: Fri 25/11/2022 10:21 This TCU line is sliding in towards the city not too bad tops, I see there is a small shower line developing on radar.

Re: General November Weather
Just under an impressive dark towering line, big rain drops and a few small hail stones.
Not too bad considering I wasn't expecting it, but the cold upper air is still present today.
Edit.. just had about a minute of heavy hail stones about 5mm.

Re: General November Weather
It sounds like there was a few peels of thunder reported from that cell as it passed between Woodend and Waikuku, also heavy hail reported too.
Must of been a coastal flick from that trough.
For me tomorrow doesn't produce a great risk, maybe low at that as I'm thinking low cloud might stream in from mid afternoon as the change pushes ahead of the moisture.

Re: General November Weather
Interesting yesterday however iv always had my eye on Saturday this week for Canterbury. The area of Mid and south Canterbury in particular tomorrow.
Next week again some chances.popping up for the country both north and south island, very cold polar trough mid to late next week for eastern south island, if that stays that way Canterbury could be looking at a severe hail set up.

Re: General November Weather
I'm thinking that too, Jason. If the upper atmos is cold like yesterday and today, but maybe warming tomorrow with the incoming system, it could a return to the clagg down here tomorrow, with low cloud cover moving in. Hopefully not.Storm Struck wrote: Fri 25/11/2022 12:32 For me tomorrow doesn't produce a great risk, maybe low at that as I'm thinking low cloud might stream in from mid afternoon as the change pushes ahead of the moisture.

Any hail observed John? This is a little unexpected.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: Fri 25/11/2022 20:52 Heavy fall and thunderstorm moving over Geraldine at the moment.![]()
There is some lower level instability tonight in the models but nothing I would of thought would do what it's doing.

Re: General November Weather
The storm just south of Ashburton appears to be dying. The lightning has stopped, radar presentation isn’t as good as it was 1/2 hour ago.

Re: General November Weather
Was very unexpected despite the cloud forms today. No hail but the rain was quite heavy resulting in the flooding in our street as photoed in the above posting. Could of been in some areas north of here, resulting in the lightning flashes I saw NE of here this evening as the cell moved and weakened as it moved away to the NE. The Radar did show some imagery of some hail though.mikestormchaser wrote: Fri 25/11/2022 21:50Any hail observed John? Re: General November Weather
About time you a clap of thunder john! One of those random nights. It happened a few years ago with aaron lived in mt somers and chased that Storm that hammerd Geraldine.
MetService are Also on the game with today's risk that's been in the models this week. Infact they have extended the risk further north aswel.

Talking random, back in the 90's I was working up at the top end of Rangitata river, we had finished work late that day and were driving out in the dark past Mt Peel when a CG hit a paddock a few kms away, scared the hell out of me, had no idea there was a storm there.

Re: General November Weather
Has suddenly become quite cloudy here. Two distinct layers of cloud (low and mid level) showing the convergence is occurring. Hopefully it clears for some more sunshine to get things going later on.

Re: General November Weather
A couple of decent cells now visible on radar - one just south of Timaru and another inland of Ashburton.

That one south of timaru is looking good on the radar, been watching it for a while now and thinking about heading that way shortly.

Re: General November Weather
Good moderate 35kmh Easterly in the city now, cell just to the west is the one to watch for the city.
On an older note, that cell yesterday that passed over Waikuku area had hail stones around 20-25mm.
I've just seen some video footage of it, quite impressive considering there was no current risk there.

Re: General November Weather
Some good distant rumbles here at the moment. Easterly is really gaining some momentum.
