Storm inland of Ashburton is going to miss town to the north. I can see the back edge of it from home. However there’s another cell near Mayfield that’s developing rapidly that may have a more favourable trajectory for a direct hit in town.

Constant rumbling from the west side of town...more building from the usual spot near Peel Forest

What’s the MS criteria for ‘severe’ hail?

Grey and overcast here with a few showers and a moderate S to Easterly wind. Heard a few distant rumbles toward the Mt. Peel area just before.

First roll of thunder just now from the new effort that's crossing over. Going very dark.
16.0°C; south-easterly.

20mm in diameter or larger. That ashburton cell has got some punch to it down there. Wonder if I'll make it down that far if it can keep strong...

Worth a try. It’s quite slow moving.

Mod Note: Thought yesterday and today's T-storms around Canterbury could do with its own thread. :-)

Currently sitting inland between rakaia and ashburton. Haven't gone that far south as radar points to it weakening.
No lightning shots today but some good hail observed none the less and some nice pictures of storm structure.
Today always was the pick for me this week. Better heating, dew points and convergence despite the lack of a polar trough. It's all relevant.

Nice structure of the intercept of the storm that dropped 20mm hail. Was starting to go green in this shot.

Plus a nice convergence shot.

Another set of heavy showers and brief thunderstorms developed over Christchurch northwards about an hour ago, just heavy showers where I was.
It's still very unstable out there with lots of high towering CU and dark bases, possibly reforming another lot of cells.
