You'd need a pretty special night to see the northern aurora from here...

First time I've ever seen one and without a lense as well, quite a vivid pinky green looking south and SW from the city right now.

Yes, deep-scarlet southern sky visible from here in Ashburton even with street-lights and lights from house-windows in the field of vision.
Very pleased to have seen it.

Great display just now in Geraldine. Best I've seen since a great display we saw near Arthurs Pass in the early 1990s in my train driving days.

You can see the clearance is moving north, so another couple of hours and it should be visible

At midnight, the 'action' might of ceased but you can see the arc of a glow extending from the SE to the SW what astronomers call "The Sheath"

Slight reddish hue to the south from here, might be more significant further south. See what happens tonight although I think there might be a veil of high cloud may move over to hinder viewing.

Seen in Namibia and in Mauritius:
For the first time in more than 30 years, Spaceweather.com has received photos of auroras in Africa. They appeared during the historic geomagnetic storm on May 10, 2024.
