How we compare to other similar latitudes

Our weather is rather mediocre compared to a similar latitude as ours ie Spain,Mid southern US etc is hotter even in their winter compared to us and of course has more variety than us but it could be the continental climate

Place NZ at the same latitude in the mid Indian Ocean, and it'll be like going back to the Ice Age. There are islands there at about the same latitude as Invercargill that are too cold for trees to grow, and the permanant snowline is at about 900m. Similar to Campbell Island I guess; probably even colder. Reason: I've been told by a climatologist many years ago that the Antarctic continent bulges out at these longitudes.

Take a look at eg Little Rock in Arkansas its about Kiakohes latitude and its late 70's and 80's there now Imagine Kaikohe or Katiaia getting 28 c in late April

Michael, latitude is just ONE of MANY factors that control Climate.

kaitaia does not get -20C in winter. Little Rock can have winter days with the temperature not rising above 0C with wind averaging 30knots. Thats not nice winter weather.

It is hard to compare Auckland's weather with cities of similar lattitude as most of them are continental. But two cities with a maritime influence, Melbourne and San Fransico have similar average temperature regimes to Auckland.

I reckon Otago is NZ's top province.

ah, but if you a night person, then the cold nights in central otago could be a problem...but if not much wind at night, then no problem

san fransisco gets alot of fog, and only sometimes gets hot weather, when the wind blows from the land....
its the inland valley that gets real hot.,...too hot...45oC

Yes, San Fransisco gets real cool weather off the sea. Its climate is cooler than Auckland's. Infact the whole of the California Coast experiences something similar to our springtime anticyclonic southwesters. A big temperature inversion, onshore wind, and lots of stratocumulus.

i saw a posting about the sun being visible for the first time in weeks
today is a sunny day
ok, its been cloudy lately, but we usualy get a sunny day at least every 3 or 4 days, after a run of cloudy weather
inland california is the place for you michael
any rain event is a major storm system, there!
