Severe gales in Hawkes Bay andWairarapa

Those gales seemed to be unusually prolonged. Here in Canterbury (Chch/BP at least), northwesterly gales usually seem to last no more than about 1/2 a day, but these NI severe winds look like being a 2 day event.

Where are the Hawkes Bay forum members, or have they been blown out into the Pacific?

Nearly blown out to sea, we have had worse last year. About 20km from me was the fatality where a tree blew over on a vehicle resulting in the death of two people. What can you say.

the above weather station either is too sheltered or just does not get that wind very well...or just missed out this time around
those lee trough winds are pathcy....some areas will get them real bad, others will not....

the other problem is that trees like populars are in full leaf now,....when they were not in the winter,....and so catch the wind easily

Napier doesnt really get the gales like here but if you go from Dannevirk to Napier they can have a gale westerly in Dannevirk,becomes light in Waipuk and often an easterly seabreeze in Napier

Maximum gust of 50 km/h in Havelock North (fairly sheltered here).
Gust of 139 km/h recorded at private station in Flaxmere, where it's very exposed.

Gales are far more severe on Foveaux staright with an average of 93km/h on the South-west cape....

but then again, who lives there???
