Re: General November Weather
Good to see less westerly in the modelling now, are we going to move into a Summer pattern early this year ? the Spring pattern seemed to start early this year.

Re: General November Weather
Just thought I would note the amazing temps being recorded on the west coast in the last 2 days, both Hoki and Westport had 25C yesterday and are a little cooler today but up around 22C.
Recorded 27 days with rain at the bach last month so for the locals these temps must be bliss

Re: General November Weather
another glorious day here today.
25.9°C at the moment which is what we maxed at yesterday.
not the hottest November temps I have recorded - got into the 27°C's twice in 2011.
and yes, a very pleasant change after a very wet and sodden September and October.
25 days with rain in October and from 20th September, we had 8 dry days until end of October.

Re: General November Weather
Reefton can be up on the daily maximums for NZ but Met Service don't seem record them on their daily charts from what I can gather. Being inland, the town came get day's of 30C on dry days in the summer.

Yes it seems that the Met Service only have recording equipment at Murchison instead, wonder which town would be the warmest.
Thin fog here this morning but looks to be a blue above it so maybe a warm one coming up here today.

Low cloud coming in from the south now, so I suppose that's the end of our sunny morning.
13.8 deg. at present.

Re: General November Weather
Metservice also have equipment at Springs Junction, but that's over 40km away and quite different climate wise than Reefton because it's more in the mountains - somewhat annoyingly, this is the info you see on Reefton's Metservice webpage.
Murchison would be more similar, even though it's 80km away.
NIWA do have a weather station in Reefton that's been running since the 1960's but it seems to get out of calibration quite regularly based on my observations.
Currently the average temps recorded by my (cheap) station and NIWA are virtually identical, but I record lower mins and higher max's than them.
as for daily highs getting up there - you're right, in summer it can be very warm. had 18 days of +30°C temps recorded last summer.

Re: General November Weather
Looks like a taste of summer in the north Sunday/Monday? I see 850mb temps are forecast to be around 13C. Should get to 24C on those days maybe...

Re: General November Weather
I spotted a brief funnel cloud this afternoon with a definite rope like figure on the weak CU convergence between NE/SW, quite surprising given the cloud tops were very low.
It looks like Sunday could be quite a warm day for the east of the south island, temperatures around 28-30C.
Nice for cup and show week though in Canterbury

Re: General November Weather
It was sort of interesting the way that it went from NE to a more southerly direction today. Felt a bit humid too, rather than a cooler feeling when the SW went through.Storm Struck wrote:I spotted a brief funnel cloud this afternoon with a definite rope like figure on the weak CU convergence between NE/SW, quite surprising given the cloud tops were very low.

Re: General November Weather
Yes looking warmer over the Country over the next few days, I am getting a forecasted high of up to 25 C with today up to 24.
Looks like the Ridge will sticking around for 8+ day's according to GFS, Back to more settled conditions, usual for November.
November going back to my records is always the driest month of the year.

Stable looking pattern for the country! And a blocking high next week.
A nice crop of elevated storms in the Tasman along the warm axis of air advecting off Aussie. Are these elevated storm events in the Tasman becoming more common?

A pretty cloudy day overall... just a few sunny spells in the afternoon. Hopefully tomorrow is nicer!

Re: General November Weather
My thinking here is that a hotter Australia leads to an increase in elevated convection over the Tasman Sea. This results in a higher incidence of elevated thunder events over the South Island and higher rainfall as well. Taking a long term perspective here, not just referring to this season.A nice crop of elevated storms in the Tasman along the warm axis of air advecting off Aussie. The opposite today, very moist and strocumulus.Air looks drier tomorrow.
GFS shows some convection over the inland Bay of Plenty tomorrow. Upper air is warm so surface temps would have to get quite high.

Is there an inversion due to the warm upper air?NZstorm wrote: The opposite today, very moist and strocumulus.

Very moist conditions here. The sort we would expect late afternoon heat thunder if we were in the height of summer.
Still tho MS are saying 25 for here tomorrow.

Re: General November Weather
Typical November weather with the cloud cover on an anticyclonic southwesterly here, usually a sunny or partly sunny afternoon with this pattern, looks like a mostly sunny week ahead with the flow going southeast

Was hoping for an early taste of summer but it looks like we'll miss out this time...
