Re: General May Weather
How things change in 24 hours.. copped a fair dumping of heavy rain on & off throughout the day, had one huge crack of thunder just before 9am this morning but the only fireworks since then were about 45 mins ago with a car on fire up the end of the street
Not only is Arthurs shut for a few days with that huge slip, SH6 again, down between Haast & Makarora is also closed due to the same, slips & heavy rain. Still going for some heavyish showers over the next couple of days, the moisture fetch is there.. but some sun would be nice too

Re:
We only had an inch (well 25.9mm) yesterday in town, but had a lot more higher up. The Inangahua River was flowing higher than I have seen it for quite some time (probably the last year) and we had a lot of rain at work (@ 550m elevation). I should be able to get an amount on Monday, but it was certainly more than 25mm up there.melja wrote:Came over the lewis to the coast tonite, wind not to bad and a bit of flooding around reefton.

Good instability out in the Tasman Sea today with 1000j/kg CAPE out there. The front will bring some of that CAPE 200j/kg into the west of the North Island later today with a definite chance of some lightning. Some squalls as well.

Re: General May Weather
There is a 500mb -40C plotted on the gfs model for tomorrow night. The cb's push the freezing level down to the surface in the showers, so snow will fall to sea level for a time.

That storm is passing just to the north of Palmerston North, currently. Have heard several loud rumbles of thunder and have seen a couple of intracloud lightning flashes.Manukau heads obs wrote:south taranaki/wanganui getting a good thunderstorm

Re: General May Weather
Nice fine day today with a thunderous rain-band along the Alps to the west, especially to the North to NW of here.
Hoping this would last and develop further south along the Alps this evening but doesn't look likely, sadly.
Interesting cold front change through Dunedin this afternoon.

That was an impressive front coming across Dunedin this afternoon. 10º drop in a very short time. Also very well captured on timelapse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2Pseq8ImHY (Paul Le Comte)

Re: General May Weather
Im confused how Arthurs Pass wont be getting any snow according to Met Services road snowfall warnings. latest metvuw maps show the SW turning slight back to a SSW after it hit the Dunedin area. This could potentially bring snow more into CHCH city and the plains?? not alot but looks like something.
