Had a weak thunderstorm come through Palmerston North this morning, with the Southerly wind change, dropping the temperature from 18C to 9C over 1Hr, around 11:00am.

Woke this morning in Queenstown with a light dusting of snow on most of the mountains ranges. Some dusting on the Crown Range hills and up the back of Alexandra also.

Almost all gone tonight though here in Queenstown. The locals tell me it was the first snow they have seen this season. Prob get a bit more in the weekend.

Getting colder

There has been a few dustings now since the start of March, The old Man range south of Alex can get snow at any time of the year. 8)

Yes Jason.

Strong SW reaching Gale at times in exposed areas tomorrow night and Sunday, abating Sunday night for us. East coast of the NI, very strong winds. Gale on Sunday, not an Auckland SW gale but true strong winds, (Sorry Michael, lol).

Should be some thunderstorms about tomorrow, the risk decresses the further you go north for us on the east coast. Hail for sure and rain with snow to 5 - 400m on B'sP on Saturday night possible easing Sunday morning / afternoon.

Will be cold and signaling winter is here!

The new video camera will certainly be put to use. Would'nt it be a bugger if no storms happened, winds will be strong though.

Off chance of tornadoes to if were lucky.....:D

Cheers.....

The very cold change is moving through at night over dry cold land so the timming for Thunderstorms to occur is not good, there's a better chance of them occuring out to Sea on the Front and perhaps up the NorthIsland East Coast on Sunday morning as far North as Gisbourne.

Looks to me like a 'high risk' of thunder over coastal Southland/South Otago saturday evening.

By the MetService forecast and your thoughts it seems that you may have some "interesting" weather over the weekend, though I know of a good friend currently in Oamaru who may not appreciate the weather as much as you are looking forward to it. Hope you get what you are wishing for, she can thaw out when she comes over here on Thursday !
Over this side of the drink we are heading for the warmest April recorded if temps stay as forecast next week, Sunday the warmest in the outlook period, a top of 29°, 10° above average.

Agree NZstorm and Spwill, things don't look as good the further you go north because of the SW arriving later and later in the day plus associated cold pool but down south is in for a good shot, hope something comes up to atleast the Timaru area...There may be enough advection though to still keep things going up to Chch, we'll see..

Before the big change arrives we should have NE or calm weather with sun (or twilight/darkness more likely) and maybe a few clouds about so that's a plus. Here's hoping!

Head east. Banks Peninsula may came up trumps for some lightning early Sunday. :)

I'm on Waiheke Island this weekend - probably one of the most sheltered areas of NZ in a strong, cold south/southwest flow. Had some brief overnight showers, but just cloudy this morning with a fresh southwesterly. Looks like the far southeast will bear the brunt of the coming blast, with snow flurries maybe as low as 200 or 300 metres. Possibly a dusting of the higher Banks Peninsula tops, but usually there's a fair difference between settling and falling levels this time of year, with ground temps still relatively warm.

No sign of the southerly yet although we did get a light shower when I was dozing before.
Sky very mixed from mid-afternoon with lots of unstable forms around plus light winds jossling 'twixt south and east.
Calm now with a NW upstairs according to the clouds blowing across the moon :)

We may be in luck both of us John few strikes been going off just near Elesmere before on tracker it's settled a little now though.
NE wind here so will go good up against the SW when it comes through :D radar at 9pm also looks very impresive.
If nothing happnz overnight something is bound to tomora forecast is for showers becoming more frequent and heavy with isaolated thunderstorms and hail and strong to sevre SW gales 110kmh in exposed coastal places. :D 8)
Hopefully I can crack out a beer or two on Anzac day if all goes well tonight and tomora 8-[ :-$
Cheers

Hi Jason,
May look good for tonight :)
I have now uprgraded to a 4 alert for this evening/tonight although most of the action should be out to sea.
Keep an eye out. could be some good night time shots :)
I wonder where Aaron and Steve are ?
