Re: General August Weather
Its nice to see the gfs verifying with the front out to the NW of the North Island activating this morning. The speed shear is often the little bit of magic that can get the lightning fired up. The 500mb wind is around 55knots.

Re: General August Weather
Both GFS and EC significantly ramping up moisture levels this morning for tomorrow, most areas in mid Canterbury should receive between 30-50mm tomorrow with snow down to 500-600m

Yes, another good soaking on the way for Canterbury and perhaps snow as low as 300m tomorrow morning.

Re: General August Weather
See if the storms can keep firing along the front as it comes into our west.
I thought the front might spoil the afternoon but it comes in a bit later now, currently sunny 17C.

Re: General August Weather
I see MS have Severe Thunderstorm Watch out for the west coasts of Waikato to Northland.
Risks have also been upgraded in their latest Outlook update for this evening…
Risks have also been upgraded in their latest Outlook update for this evening…
MetService Thunderstorm Outlook
Valid to: Midnight Sunday 13 Aug 2017
Issued at: 3:52pm Sunday 13 Aug 2017
Updated at 3:50pm Sunday - risk of thunderstorms over northern North Island increased to high and a moderate risk of SEVERE thunderstorms added to areas from Waitomo northwards.
An unstable northwesterly airmass will cover northern and central New Zealand today, with bands of rain, heavy showers or thunderstorms affecting many areas.
Over the northern half of the North Island, a front in the north Tasman Sea embedded within this northwest flow will move eastwards across the island this evening. There is a high risk of thunderstorms associated with this front about Northland, Auckland, Waikato and northern Waitomo from this evening, especially near the coast, where there is also a moderate risk of one or two SEVERE thunderstorms. Any thunderstorms that develop will be accompanied by localised heavy rain of 10 to 20mm per hour, hail of 5 to 15mm in diameter and squally wind gusts of 90 km/hr. Any SEVERE thunderstorms that eventuate could produce localised downpours of 20 to 30mm per hour and possibly damaging gusts of 100 km/hr or more and a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH has been issued. A lower thunderstorm risk covers remaining parts of the northern and central North Island from this evening with the front.
Over the lower North Island, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms about Kapiti and northern Wellington until this evening and a lower risk about Manawatu, Horowhenua and southern Wellington. Localised heavy rain and small hail will accompany any thunderstorms that develop in this area.
In the South Island, the main thunderstorm risk is about Westland until later this afternoon and about Buller, western Nelson (inluding Kahurangi National Park) and the Marlborough Sounds all day. There is also a moderate risk of one or two thunderstorms about inland parts of Mid and South Canterbury for a time in the afternoon and early evening as winds tend southerly in this area. These thunderstorms will be accompanied by localised heavy rain and hail.
A lower risk of thunderstorms covers the remainder of Nelson, inland Canterbury and the Marlborough Sounds through much of the day, and also about coastal Southland this afternoon as indicated on the chart.
No other thunderstorms or significant convection expected over New Zealand today.

Re: General August Weather
Not looking very thundery today in South Canterbury but has been raining steadily since about 1pm, with rain gradually moving over from the north.

Re: General August Weather
Storms positioned well on the frontal line under the upper level jet, Lightning most probable over the West Coast from Waitomo north, with what I would expect more vigorous activity over Northland in the next 6 hours as the front is sitting somewhat under the upper level jet entrance .

Re: General August Weather
Lots of thunder and lightning just past us in Titirangi, GreenBay and New Lynn area over the last 30 minutes or so.
Took some video footage. Hopefully there are some nice lightning bolts in there.
I did go out for a local storm chase to see some of the action. Too many frickin trees.
Heavy rain for about 15 minutes.

Re: General August Weather
Probably the same thunderstorms observed to the west from here last night.
Of course they always draw themselves towards Auckland area, must be some sort of magnet up there???
Anyway persistent rain down here with 7.5mm to 6pm, with more to come.
Rather calm conditions.

Re: General August Weather
Drove out to NW Auckland to meet the storm. Will check my photos to see if I caught anything interesting however I would have been better staying here for photos as there was no shelter out there.

Re: General August Weather
There was squally heavy rain/small hail mix in that storm.
Here in Grey Lynn my gauge recorded 12mm.

Re: General August Weather
The media are raving on about lightning strikes on the Auckland Sky tower.
By the way they are going on, I thought there would be heaps of pictures on here

Re: General August Weather
Interesting 24 hours coming up for us in Canterbury and surrounds tomorrow. And just then it had dried out enough to mow the lawns. Managed to get the kids interested in making a rain gauge out of a soft drink bottle tonight, stuck it on the front lawn and built a rock cairn around it for any wind. Kids are now excited about the rain tonight, parenting win!
