Saw a very brief cb pop up over Western Waikato this afternoon and then fizzle quickly.
Great photos from yesterday Greg. The first photo resembles a wall cloud but it won't be as the upper winds were too weak.

Thanks NZstorm, I was wondering what that cloud formation could have been.NZstorm wrote: Sun 14/01/2018 18:09 Great photos from yesterday Greg. The first photo resembles a wall cloud but it won't be as the upper winds were too weak.

Felt it no more than any other place that has similar temps - read enough of the 'I'm melting' from Cantabrians on social media.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: Sun 14/01/2018 17:34 They will all be melting down there![]()

Unsure what weather station the Invercargill City Council use (or where exactly within the ICC building it is) but it registered 33.1C.

Tweet by MetService gives the days high as 33.1*C at Millers Flat in Otago. Max for Invercargill Airport given as 32.3*C.

Will it be as warm again on Monday?

THe Invercargill City Council WS is a Davis Vantage Vue mounted on the roof of their 5-6 story building in Esk St. So not exactly an 'official' WS, particularly as its temps can be up to 6C higher than the airport just a few kms away.mattyj46 wrote: Sun 14/01/2018 20:12 Unsure what weather station the Invercargill City Council use (or where exactly within the ICC building it is) but it registered 33.1C.

The third night in a row with 20C minimum here. Looking similar the next 3 nights as well. Hoping for some decent rain from the incoming system this week as it's been 10 days since the last lot.

6 degrees higher? When it was showing through the 'Your Weather' on Metservice, the difference from the airport temp was 1 - 2 degrees, much like a lot of private stations...Nev wrote: Mon 15/01/2018 06:56THe Invercargill City Council WS is a Davis Vantage Vue mounted on the roof of their 5-6 story building in Esk St.

That Tasman cut off low is making mince meat of the models at the moment. They have no idea on it's track and movement after 48 hours. EC's last run compared to the one before moved the centre of the low over 1000 km north west at only 96 hours out

Re: General January Weather
The depression is contrary, in the wrong phase of the MJO (currently in 3, which does not favour depressions in the Tasman), so the models will have a harder time with this one as the wider scale environment is not supportive. Thats probably why the depression is forecast to weaken in-situ later in the week, but there's definitely some internal conflicts in the models with this one.Cyclone Tracy wrote: Mon 15/01/2018 10:07 That Tasman cut off low is making mince meat of the models at the moment. Looking like a slow moving front Thursday, we do need follow up rain here from the fall early month, getting dry again.

Hot one here all-right. Cracked the 31C mark with a bit of a northerly breeze blowing through.

Re: General January Weather
My observation was based on the ICC's last 6 years of data (no data from late-Feb to Nov, 2015). Admittedly, the more extreme T-max anomalies between the ICC WS and the airport do seem to have lessened over the last year compared to previous years. So maybe something has changed?Flutterbye wrote: Mon 15/01/2018 10:016 degrees higher? Note that before yesterday, Invercargill Aero had only recorded 2 30.0C+ days so far this century, compared to 30 days in the last 6 years at the ICC's WS. And although the last of those 30 days (Feb 03, 2016) was only 1.6C higher than the airport, all the others (between Dec 2011 and Feb 2015) were between 3.5C and 7.0C higher than at the airport, with an average anomaly of 5.1C.

Dunedin Aero's Jan record is 34.6C (2004), making its reported 33.9C today the 3rd highest since records began in 1963. Its Feb and all-time record is 34.9C (1995).

Re: General January Weather
Maybe they've changed the weather station. As for the airport, I'm not surprised that they record very few 30+ degree days. If there was another weather station elsewhere in the city, it would likely be a different story!Nev wrote: Mon 15/01/2018 22:23My observation was based on the ICC's last 6 years of data (no data from late-Feb to Nov, 2015). Re: General January Weather
MetService tweet gives the maximum on Monday as 33.9*C at Dunedin Airport.
https://twitter.com/MetService/status/9 ... 2341596160
Interestingly, a tweet from NIWA gives the maximum for Sunday for Invercargill as 31.8*C which contradicts the 32.3*C originally quoted by MetService - unless they are referring to another observing station rather than the airport.

Re: General January Weather
I am sorry about posting twice while most of you guys are asleep, but there were some fascinating clouds on the northern side of Banks Peninsula yesterday (Monday 15th Jan) afternoon. They appear to have been caused by low level ripples/waves and aligned the cloud (probably stratus/cumulus) perpendicular to the E/NE surface wind. Did anyone photograph them from the ground?

By the way, Dan Corbett used to present the weather on the BBC a few years ago. He was a bit of a character.

The old manual site and NIWA's new EWS are just SE of the terminal (both recording 31.8C on Sunday), while MetService's AWS is NW of the terminal.Simon Culling wrote: Tue 16/01/2018 01:26 Interestingly, a tweet from NIWA gives the maximum for Sunday for Invercargill as 31.8*C which contradicts the 32.3*C originally quoted by MetService - unless they are referring to another observing station rather than the airport.

Re: General January Weather
That would be the best example of the BP wave cloud.
Can we get a third ground hog day here today - cooled to 13.1deg and 13.2deg overnight both Saturday/Sunday and Sun/Mon - Both Sun & Mon's highs were 30.7deg & 30.8deg - Both days a light moderate NW blew till mid afternoon where a convergence line of cloud got pushed SW by a NE wind that was feed by daytime heating, only difference was Sundays NW wind change was stronger

And NW of the runway too, meaning the N-NE wind flow wont be be effecting the accucsy at all. the AWS is wide open. Got to remember too just because they are NIWA or MetS recording stations doesn't mean they all meet WMO standards either, some are in microclimate sitesNev wrote: Tue 16/01/2018 07:50The old manual site and NIWA's new EWS are just SE of the terminal (both recording 31.8C on Sunday), while MetService's AWS is NW of the terminal.Simon Culling wrote: Tue 16/01/2018 01:26 Interestingly, a tweet from NIWA gives the maximum for Sunday for Invercargill as 31.8*C which contradicts the 32.3*C originally quoted by MetService - unless they are referring to another observing station rather than the airport.
