Nice having a day of early autumn warmth, 26.6deg and a NW wind that has only just come up.

Re: General March Weather
Flew back from from Te Horo in the Kapiti after attending a wedding up there this WE.
Coming into Timaru, this evening, quite turbulant flying in the old Bombardier with the areoplane bouncing around approaching Levels airport. After landing I thanked the captain for an interesting flight.

Starting to look like March could be a very dry month with only 14mm so far. Looking stable till at least the 24th

Not much happening for next 15 days. Back to more traditional autumn weather now. However Saturday's weather will be mucked up in Auckland by an moist easterly surge.

Re: General March Weather
Dry march will help soil warmth and growth I would think and evaporation will be much lower now too.

Re: General March Weather
There has been very deep lows in the "4Teeze" before, but no significant weather has hit NZ or any other places.
I can remember a few years ago when a very deep low was just off BP, about 973hPa and the day in ChCh was clear and fine with hardly any wind. However , later in the evening there was some lightning flashes observed to the south in beyond BP. When the borometer went up, after the low ventured further away, there wasn't any significant weather to follow it.

Re: General March Weather
same here.
Rather quiet over the past few days.
I'm working up to my 13000 posting so I'd say that it was a cloudy day here.

Huge pressure difference at midnight below NZ .A low of 940 SW of Stewart Is and a high of 1044 SE of the Chathams. Not seen that gradient for a while.

Re: General March Weather
Warm day here with a very intense anticyclone out to the SE, central pressure well over 1040 hPa.
I see the next anticyclone should crack the 1040 hPa mark as well.
Long time since we have had high pressure of that magnatude around us.

Was a lovely day with 24deg, all about to go down hill over the next few days, mind you a bit more rain would be good.

Looking like much of the country in the 23C to 25C range today. But Timaru Airport got 29C and Alexandra/Dunedin Airport 28C.

but it was still a warm day down here, an excellent day compared to rubbish we have been having lately and also what's coming up. I doubt the thunder risk, even low, for down here tomorrow.Conditions not suitable.

General March Weather
There was torrential and quite unexpected rain in New Plymouth this morning. The Metservice forecast for today was Cloudy periods with a few light showers. I got up at 6.30 and put the washing on fully intending to put it on the line to dry. A few minutes later it starting raining and it bucketed down for the next couple of hours.
Driving to work there was plenty of flooding, particularly with autumn leaves blocking the drains. Apparently, stormwater manhole covers in some streets were being blown off by the pressure. My work building has an internal gutter which overflowed into the building flooding down into a lower floor.
Stuff has some coverage:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily- ... w-Plymouth
The Taranaki Regional Council site at Brooklands Zoo (about 1km south of the City Centre) recorded 74mm of rain between 6.45 and 7.45 (see the attached file). This is exceptionally heavy rain - I think the NZ record is about 109mm in an hour.
Just a few km away there was little rain. New Plymouth Airport (about 10km away) has recorded just over 3mm this morning.
Nothing at all spectacular showed up on the Metservice Radar at the time but the rain was very heavy in the central city area.
