Re: General March Weather
I foolishly went for a run and got caught in that massive deluge, 12mm in 20 minutes. Dripping wet from head to toe...

You get more rumbles of thunder heard up there than down here, but mind you it has been quite rumbly down here in Geraldine, since we moved here than what it was when we lived in West Melton.Cyclone Tracy wrote: Fri 23/03/2018 17:21 Heard here as well....its been a long time between rumbles.

Re: General March Weather
A sunny warm morning here, current 22C, dp 18C, see what can develop this afternoon.
Instability is widespread across NZ today, thunder risk for much of NZ today
Should be clear for the cricket at Eden Park tomorrow and Monday

Uninteresting day here so far. Just scattered moderate rain showers. Earlier TS activity to the west appears to have died out.

I notice that there have been a dozen or so lightning strikes around Gore (and to its SE) recently (21hrs NZ time). Is it unusual for there to be late evening storms in this part of NZ during early autumn?

Yes a bit unusual. Divergence aloft is a primary trigger for this type of storm.Simon Culling wrote: Sat 24/03/2018 22:48 I notice that there have been a dozen or so lightning strikes around Gore (and to its SE) recently (21hrs NZ time). K index chart for 10am today. The 500mb trough still across the South Island this morning and the front gradually exiting the North Island. Will be a fine warm day in Auckland for cricket.

Lot of activity in the south Tasman Sea this evening as a result of an energetic looking trough moving into the area.

For anyone who maybe interested, UKMet has now taken over from EC as the most accurate global weather model in the southern hemisphere over the last 5 weeks. Latest reports on 120 hours and 144 hours @ 500 hPa from NOAA. UKmet is running over 90% accuracy to 120 hours

Couple of pics I took from my van at Lincoln Road intersection this Monday 26 th. Almost looks like a wallcloud forming. A good friend of mine saw the same at Hepburn Road with a lot of rotation in the clouds.

A very traditional looking thunderstorm set up over South Canterbury later Saturday with 700mb temps down to -8C. Last time we saw air that cold over NZ was November.
