Quite overcast here now and much cooler. Lots of boring SC layers around. Easterlies have fropped a bit though.

Started off fine today with NE winds but from noon, cloud started to look interesting with come Cu congestus forms developing.
However lower boring Sc layers developed in the afternoon as a consequence of convergence with a rather stiff or fresh easterly blowing.
No thunder heard but there could of been something along the foothills especially around TC Corner.
22.9C it got up today before the easterly freshoned and the SC layers gradually covered the sky turning to clagg later this afternoon and evening.

Tuesday, Wednesday next week have potential at this stage, maybe a slight risk on Sunday too with a trough brushing the eastern South Island.

Tuesday is looking really promising on some of this mornings model runs, \:D/

There was plenty of altocumulus forms last night as the showers shifted slightly more north, remained dry where I was but up the road in Hallswel and Tai Tapu had some heavy showers.

The west and SW flow looking ahead reminds me of the December's around the early 2000,s. Plenty of thunder risk days sometimes several days in a row, especially between Christmas and new years.
So could be fair to say that those main holiday weeks might be quite unsettled for much of the south island especially.

Certainly some signs their Richard! December can be notorious for big storms and severe hail on the Canterbury plains when conditions are their. Although it an happen anytime of the spring/summer months December seems to have a wee record their for the plains.

I did watch Tony's met Monday briefing on Monday night and enjoy his long range outlooks. He also made mention of SW changes coming through this month and especially around the Xmas and new years eve period.

Yes i can remember storms happening around that period (chasing that tornado in 2002 in Jimmy, the Morris minor, just after getting a haircut!) also the 1990's and when growing up in the 1960's.
I hope this year you don't get the stratus moving in on each change on days looking likely for 'possible' thunderstorm activity ?

That supercell was on labour weekend in oct 2002 wasn't it John? I remember seeing your Morris minor on that video

Golf ball hail was observed and the tornado that hit ladbrooks ( south chch)

Yes, that was Labour WE. the Hail was that loud on the roof of the cinema in Hornby, they couldn't hear the soundtrack of the movie being screened at the time because of the noise.
....anyway a fine day here with NE to Easterly breezes, moderate to fresh at times but easing down this evening.
24C the maximum for today.

Speaking of cinemas, wind must have been strong when I was in one this afternoon, bits of deciduous tree twigs all over the streets by the Domain after I came outdoors.

Some quite welcome rain here around 7mm so far, Banks Peninsula is just over 10mm to the hour.
Much of the night remained on 18C thanks to the warm Northerly flow and warm upper air. Thankfully not as warm as Sydney was yesterday on 43C.
Very hot for only 9 days into summer, even several flights were put on hold due to a hot tarmac and hazy skies from nearby fires burning around NSW.

Tuesday still looks good for thunderstorms/hail, then warming up by the end of the week.

An unstable southwest flow for eastern NZ tomorrow, some heavy showers /possible thunderstorm from North Otago to Gisborne.

Mainly dry for Auckland this week, a fresh to strong southwesterly from tomorrow easing Thursday ,partly cloudy, chance of a light shower. fine weather later in the week.

Surprised would definitely have a perhaps at least a moderate risk tomorrow for Canterbury.
The wind is SW most of the day but it's quite cold upper air with a strong trough developing around lunchtime. Also given peak time of the year for even the slightest risk.
Will keep watch anyway.

MS have downgraded the Ts risk for tomorrow, here.
Looks like just stratus rolling in, after the southerly change, maybe with some rain later ?

Remaining mild with it being 17.5C at 10pm.

"Roll in the Clagg tomorrow".
Quite not appropriate for today's weather in other places from Christchurch and north of here especially in Lower Hutt and Gisborne.
Basically it was a claggy day here with it being cloudy all day but nothing thundery looking.
Some rain this morning but that was it. Some clearing of skies with the sun trying to peek through but remained rather cloudy all day. Moderate NE winds.
Today's maximum was 16.6C with 7.3mm of rain.
