Re: General January Weather
Weak surface southerly here for the last hour or so after a very warm night
Depending on if swings back to the NW it might struggle to get near the forecast 31c in Timaru.

Like SE Queensland however I noticed the Gold Coast was around 25-26C dew point yesterday.

Re: General January Weather
Possibly the effect of warm airmass and forecast wind direction coming over land rather than from the ocean as usual? Similar to the perfect heat set up for Wellington but wind from S/SSE rather NE/NNE?

Re: General January Weather
A warm night overnight with it remaining on 25C until 5am then down to 23C.
Back up to 26C now without any sunshine yet but looks set to appear soon as this high cloud band clears.
Today we might well surpass 35C in some areas, just depends how strong the NW gets in the east.
Thoughts go out to those affected by the fires yesterday in North Canterbury.

Only 21 here at the moment. Not a cloud in the sky. We’ve had a sneaky southerly wind change so hopefully that disappears and we get some good heat going.

26.0°C at my place; apparently warmer than that elsewhere in town.
Heard my first cicadas of the summer today, in the trees between West & East Streets, and in Oak Grove, and Argyle Park.

29 degrees here at 1020am in Southern CHCH. Enough blue sky and we will hit 35 today.
EDIT: Maybe not, thin high cloud is developing and a fresher northwest getting strong. Felt warmer yesterday. Maybe 31 tops.

Re: General January Weather
I wonder if that could be a wee bit of uHI happening there, something that Maxis so aggressively pointed out
I came across one in my garden last week, it even sat on my hand. Odd why they are about but not making noise here so far

Re: General January Weather
Puzzling actually, my thermometer and the other one I notice are usually pretty close, except when mine gets the sun on it at which point I don't post about it
The other one (pws) is now showing 30.6°C and mine reads 27.3°C.

Re: General January Weather
It is steadily climbing out there with 30.1C now, the heat won't really kick in until mid afternoon and by then the NW may have dropped back abit too.
Have been trying to figure out why sometimes the national high current temperature is different to the cities temperature when you click into it.
Perhaps this is a collaboration of temperatures on average around Christchurch as apposed to the airport station

Clear blue dome skies now, but the temp stuck around 31 degrees. The northwest strong enough to keep the temp from climbing much further. Hastings on 33.

Re: General January Weather
There is an active front in the models for the west of the North Island for Tuesday, some tornado risk with it. Tasman sea fronts usually become weak by the time they reach Auckland this time of year, see what we get here Tuesday.

Re: General January Weather
We could sure use some rain… 15mm month to date and little in the outlook.
Be interesting to see if there’s enough sun to reach the forecast 30 today - my station has only hit 30.0+ twice in the 14 year record. SE winds can result in a kind a foehn effect up here

Re: General January Weather
Well we have an onshore NNE breeze here now despite the forecast SE, perhaps not likely to make 30C locally after all. Tomorrow also looking hot and wind direction could be more favourable for my area...
