Afternoon Convective Showers -

Unread post by 03Stormchaser »

Looks like we will be getting a few afternoon convective showers on the plains and foothills this week. I see Metservice are going with a thunderstorms forecast on the Wednesday. Also heavy showers possible on tuesday.

Will be interesting to see if these storms pull thru!

They aren't going to drift eastwards towards town like that other shower that came off the ranges and gave a sprinkle in chc last week, i think it was, at about 7pm?. Oh well.

I am surprised i couldn't see anything bubbling up inland yesterday and today it's been warm enough although i think because the NE wind is a little lighter as apposed to being fresh because it often reaches inland then.Well it rushes towards inland because of the heat. ;)
But tomorrow and Wednesday should see some nice showers going up and maybe a thunderstorm there.
Cheers
Jason.

Isolated showers look likely for the Ak area later today( sea breeze convergence), have a line of small T Cu through our west.
24C, dewpoint is a rather humid 17C.

just seen a fairly weakish T/Cu push thru before but it does look a bit pilfery.

but as you say spwill, this is the start of it and lets hope for showers later.

A seabreeze convergence line runs across the Auckland isthmus from the SE out to the NW with some small showers along it.

I see GreyLynn has had just 5.2 mm of rain this month so far.

Had a short sharp shower over Te Atatu Peninsula (West Auckland) around 4pm from sea breeze convergence. Todays NZWP spounding shows air unstable below 3200m, hence skies really clouded up this afternoon.

I see metservice have a 'moderate' chance of T/S today for most of the Nth Island....

seems a bit hopeful, i would have gone with a low risk at most.

we do need some rain tho.....dry as a bone at home

High cloud cover today so less heating. There are a few small Cu towers around Auckland hitting a mid level inversion. Some showers over Northland I see.
23C, dp 17C.

there was a good build over the northern waitaks around 12:30pm that was breaking through the inversion layer....
but it did not perist...
DP not as quite as high today, and yes more high cloud cover...which thins out to the west, so afternoon sun will be hotter...
sea breeze here now..

Todays sounding has a warm nose at 600mb which amounts to a very strong cap. That warm layer will have to erode away entirely for deeper convection to occur. And dewponits a couple of degrees higher, say 18C or 19C would help make a difference, as would sunny skies. Currently 8/8. Still, a few showers will develop under tha cap this afternoon.

Didn't really notice the humidty but was warm while wading through the Travis Wetland up to waste high in mud all day  :D .
I think the moisture you are referring to would be smoke, haze from the bushfires in Australia I think someone in the NI pointed that out the other day.
Looks interesting from MS point of veiw thunderwise tomorrow might not be too bad actually could pull off nicly inland and then the risk of them spreading eastwards but time will tell.
Cheers

Yes Jason, looks to be a real risk there today of thunderstorms/hail developing ahead of the front over North Otago/Canterbury. Thats based on the low level NE flow and dewpoints around 15-16C. Storms will drift eastward. As for the North Island, the dps are marginal but looks to be some potential for thunderstorms in the ranges from Waikato to Gisborne.

Looking forward to a good one.
Some interesting dark clouds were forming around Albany yesterday morning (21th) but nothing really happened.

Beautifull sunset though last night over the Waitakere ranges.

Very likely a severe thunderstorm straight west of Napier on the ranges. Cloud tops to about -60C. Must be very heavy rain under this one.

Another TS in eastern Gisborne.
